Seoul (CNN) - About 1,600 people have been secretly filmed in motel rooms in South Korea, with the footage live-streamed online for paying customers to watch, police said Wednesday.

Two men have been arrested and another pair investigated in connection with the scandal, which involved 42 rooms in 30 accommodations in 10 cities around the country. Police said there was no indication the businesses were complicit in the scheme.

In South Korea, small hotels of the type involved in this case are generally referred to as motels or inns.

Cameras were hidden inside digital TV boxes, wall sockets and hairdryer holders and the footage was streamed online, the Cyber Investigation Department at the National Police Agency said in a statement.
The site had more than 4,000 members, 97 of whom paid a $44.95 monthly fee to access extra features, such as the ability to replay certain live streams. Between November 2018 and this month, police said, the service brought in upward of $6,000.

"There was a similar case in the past where illegal cameras were (secretly installed) and were consistently and secretly watched, but this is the first time the police caught where videos were broadcast live on the internet," police said.

South Korea has a serious problem with spy cameras and illicit filming. In 2017, more than 6,400 cases of illegal filming were reported to police, compared to around 2,400 in 2012.

A friend dug up a realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly awful piece of information on Korea yesterday. Weed, which is illegal- and let's ignore that it's a plant that has proven health properties including: pain management, stress reduction, insomnia mediator, nausea helper. My Auntie was dying from pancreatic cancer in 2015 and was so sick from chemo- she would drink weed tea to help her feel more comfortable but let's JAIL her!

But the age of consent is 13, which means a 60 year old man can't smoke weed but he sure can have sex with a child in 8th grade with no problem!

Makes me wanna give up on humanity sometimes, ISTG.

Making porn legal is the best way forward in this scenario as it renders paying for something like this useless and making your own more hard work than going on a website and having tons at a click of a button, it should only leave the ones obsessed with spycam porn.

I think it's more surprising that people think this wouldn't be possible. South Korea is extremely backwards, and they're only starting to catch up. Even with the youth which is starting to become more modernised due to the internet influence, they still retain parts of their culture which has old ideologies.

I hope that this issue gets dealt with more harshly, and that South Korea really starts to shape up for the better.

No offense but before you start dragging a country's laws you might wanna check that you've got the right information. Not only has South Korea just recently passed laws allowing the use of medical cannabis, you'll also find that the legal age of consent, while technically 13, isn't the only law protecting minors, as there's another law on the books about consent in situations in which the other person is in a position of power or authority over the victim.

You call me passive aggressive but you're the one generalizing and demonizing a whole country based on something you cherry picked from their laws that wasn't even related to the topic of the thread. I can guarantee you no minor is fully legally protected from predation in ANY country, so get a better argument. Korea has a lot of work to do with their legal system and ideals, but this kind of holier-than-thou attitude by those who don't fully understand the complex socio-political environment just furthers negative attitudes and adds nothing productive to the discussion.

You are making assumptions that is my reason for unbanning porn however my reason for unbanning porn is to stop the growth of spycam porn which as the OP says is on the rise or perhaps you don't care about that huh?
