The Rise of Kpop Girl Groups (1 Viewer)

Hello my friends. I am back but not really for that long as I am very busy these days, but I wanted to gets all of your thoughts on something that I have been noticing lately and that is the rise of GG in Kpop.

These questions will be for mainly both Boy Group and Girl Groups stans but everyone can participate.
I have liked Kpop for quite a while, I started with Girls Generation, Crayon Pop, 2NE1, Wonder Girls, and others, then a few years later, I had kinda lost interest and then got back into it in 2017-18 with TWICE, Blackpink, Dreamcatcher, etc until today, and I have always seen even the top GG lack serious popularity compared to top BG for so many years.

Just to let you know that I have always been a fan of Girl Groups overall, from the Spice Girls, Girls Aloud, Destiny's Child, Eternal, Atomic Kitten, Sugababes...you get my point, and they have always had less popularity than the Boy Groups all through the years and it's not just Kpop.

So, lately, I have seen a huge rise in not only Kpop Girl Groups debuting, but debuting from the bigger companies and literally rising to the top of the charts, selling out global tours and concerts, coming to the UK (where I am from) and conquering, even having members from Boy Groups saying that 'it is hard as a 4th Gen BG because GG are more popular', and more.

I would like to ask you all that if you have noticed this and what do you think about it if you think it's true?Is it to do with the generation of Kpop we are in? Are GG really on the rise or is it just because BG have fallen a bit? or even both?

I've heard that there are only a few top BG now, whereas there are quite a few more top GG.

Where do you think this rise for GG have come from? and if you are a BG stan, do you welcome this rise or are you concerned? Or can both BG and GG perform in popularity on the same level as each other?

Why do you think GG have had this rise lately when for years they have never been able to compete with BG? Of course, GG still have a long way to catch up when it comes to selling albums, etc, but I've just seen how many awards were won by Girl Groups at MAMA this year and I hadn't seen that before.

imo i think that the reason for that might be that some of the bigger kpop gg's are sorta falling and not wanting to be in the industry anymore, or at least seem that way (aka blackpink), and people are seeing that and instead of listening to them and relieving some of the pressure off of them, they're now strarting to recognize newer gg's and wanting to see more to see how well they'll do

First define “top group”. Next, there’s no more steps because no one can define it in a satisfactory way to others. Which makes it rather hard imo to really have this discussion

'Top group' means popular group, doesn't it? Groups like SEVENTEEN, BTS, New Jeans, TXT, Le Sserafim, aespa, Stray Kids, etc. Groups who are always charting, selling a lot of albums, win end of year awards, are always in the spotlight. That's what I mean by 'Top Groups'.

I find this thread very confusing tbh, I think GG were always doing well apart form album sales

Twice alone won MAMA song of the year 3 times in a row, only BTS could constantly beat the top GG

I think the only real difference compared to the past is, there are more top GG at once and album sales in general went up for everyone, but BG still sell a lot more

how are they falling off, Twice is not charting anymore but increased all other metrics like sales and tours a lot and BP just extended their contracts and is still charting and touring well, Red Velvet also still doing well

Because people will have different ideas of what counts as popular. You make a list of “top groups” of either gender, then ask another user to do so. Chances are, given the same criteria, ie popular groups, I’m practically certain that your lists will vary a fair amount, because you’ll have differing views of what counts as popular. unless you’re going to list objective measures of popularity, like a specific minimum for albums sold in order to count as popular, you’re going to have so much subjectivity that your lists will not be nearly the same. And it only gets worse when you ask people of more differing backgrounds, say ifan vs a kfan, what they think are the popular groups.

And for the last part I hope you’re joking In case you didn’t pick up on it, if I say it’s hard to define a “top group” without specifying girl group or boy group, you do realize that it means for male groups and female groups alike? It’s not gendered, the only person trying to shove gender into that phrase is you.

Ok, that's fair enough but I still don't know why you don't understand my definition of a 'top group'. Yes, there are many definitions if you have a different perspective of what a 'top group' is, but I have already discussed what I mean by 'top group'.

I don't know why this is so hard? Or maybe I didn't get my message across properly.

I think because you have not defined the metrics you use to define popularity, thats also what Vikki was trying to say. This thread to me only makes sense if album sales is the only metric you use

yeah also some malicious people just cut together small parts out of hour long concerts to make the artists look bad, just always keep that in mind! If they would not want to do it anymore, they would not have extended their contracs
