What defines a stan? (1 Viewer)

I saw some debate online, if a kpop fan can be a stan of many groups or just one and likes others as well. This being explained by the fact that stanning a group means that they are the number 1, u know their horoscope and what high school they went to. While only being a casual fan means u know the members names and like their music, but that's all.

What do u guys think?

And which side are you on

I say when it comes to terms like these, use whatever term you feel most comfortable with, without worrying too much about the technicalities and exact definition. The term is different for everyone. Some people like it, others hate it. Some use it only for groups they're deeply into, others for any group they casually listen to. In my opinion, it doesn't matter how you use the term, as long as you think it fits and it makes you happy to call yourself a fan of the group. What matters more is the type of stan you are. It's more important to be peaceful and supportive of your faves, and stay out of fanwars, than to get hung up on this.

TLDR: This difference between the terms isn't a big deal to me, but I can understand why it would be to other people. What matters most to me is if you're a good person.

I kinda disagree with YouChan. Standom, in my opinion, is just a higher level of fandom. Like, I stan Riize and Twice and all that, because I know the most about them and support them the most. There are other groups I consider myself just a fan of because I only listen to their music and don't necessarily keep up with their goings-on (kinda like @YeoreumSkies relationship with 5SOS...). But I do believe there's also a middle ground, if that makes sense? You could only listen to their music but would like to get to know them better. That's what I call a semi-stan.

I've never called myself a stan because of the following reasons which I think are also reasons what makes someone a stan

1. I haven't spent a cent on my favs - whether it by albums, merch, concerts, etc etc
2. I don't stream my favs songs
3. I don't attack nor defend my favs online

They told one of the members to unalive themselves just cause he wrote a song about his mental health and struggles. The haters even made accounts with the song's name to send death threats.

now it's not an exclusive list and there might be other indications of what makes someone a stan but those are generally my initial thoughts

those haters would also be stans of whatever groups they stanned (stun? stan - what's the past tense of stan) lol
