A soldier who died in WW1. During the war he did something that made his rank drop all the way to the lowest rank and he was salty about that. He wanted to do something crazy to get them to reinstate his original rank. So on Armistice day, 2 minutes before the armistice was set to take effect (a fact that was known), he charged at the German machine guns in the German trench opposite of him. The Germans knew the armistice was set to take effect in a minute, so they tried waving him away because they didn’t want to shoot him. Except he didn’t listen, so they had to kill him. He was the last known American casualty of the war. He did get his rank reinstated after death at least? But it still feels like a huge fu to his family. Imagine their reaction to hearing that he basically committed suicide a minute before fighting was supposed to end He’d rather be a dead Sergeant who can never again see family vs a living private who can stay with his family for longer
