Theyre kinda long but really good.
Love Like The Galaxy (slow burn, amazing cinematography)
Dream of Splendor (women fighting for themselves and also beautiful cinematography)
Legend of Shen Li (badass FL, immortals)

seriously coming from a chinese person the most popular chinese drama recently has to be

Joy of Life and Joy of Life season 2

it's on YT as well so it's easier to access

true hits, there's also to the wonder that did really well this year, blossoms shanghai too but there's still no international distribution for whatever reason

nirvana in fire is universally loved and ming dynasty 1566 is probably the most acclaimed cdrama overall

as for others, reset is pretty popular but it really depends on what genre you like, I watch too many cdramas so I can give more pointed recs in those directions

yeap there's plenty of really good dramas but I just mentioned the ones from this year

I fear I am an idol drama hater not because I hate everyone’s giegies (gender neutral) but because the quality ratio is so awful nowadays and I think 2024 stands out especially poorly when you compare how many top dramas came out of H1 2023

I gave up giving recs when I had people contest my claim that The Knockout was the drama of the year in 2023

my wife really liked the knockout but maybe it's because of the nature of the type of drama that not everyone will be into that kind of genre????

like for example if one likes watching "idol period dramas" because of the visuals or aesthetics then maybe that's the ideal drama for them

oh yeah, the last third went totally off the rails, imho it was the long season that was the best crime thriller of 2023 cdramas, I was arguing from a numbers perspective and general public impact that the knockout dwarfed everything else

honestly idol dramas can be cute, an ancient love story was my personal favourite of 2023, but their fans turn me off I’m just grateful that the liu haocun fans have gotten off wen qi’s back

for me I usually would watch something from very specific actors/actresses or I really historical dramas (not period but ones actually based on history)

that’s totally fair, I tend to like the nugu names so it’s a bit easier for me to handle because there’s no fandom to speak of
family is chinese but immigrated elsewhere
