Kpop has finally abandoned the Uncle fan (1 Viewer)

There is types of girl crush like Blackpink, ITZY, Everglow.. all quite different from each other.. but I get what ur saying. I feel like there is less variety right now with girl groups than when I got into kpop which is kinda weird cause there is more girl groups. But if you think SNSD, Apink, F(x), Wonder Girls, Miss A, 2NE1.. their concepts aren't really same. Like you wouldn't be able to change songs between them without it feeling like cover. I feel like lot of newer girl groups are lacking identity still or they keep changing it too much so they might lose their identity between comebacks. There is still some with clear identity ofc, but less than in the past.

Yes it's really killing me not gonna lie.

I'm sort of two minds.

On one hand. I really do like some of the songs coming out. (EVERGLOW's Dun Dun for instance, is my new favorite song. So good.) So it's not that I can't musically enjoy much of the stuff.

It's just that the whole girl crush identity and concept with its themes and aesthetic does not resonate with me. For me it's too similar in composition to regular Western themes I can get any day of the week here in the West.

One of the aspects to kpop that appeals to me is that you could often find an essence that was very much different than Western fare. It had a different ethos. A different feel.

It's often short-handed (sometimes derisively) as "cute". But it's not just being cute. Its in their whole aesthetic and conceptual approach.

Something about kpop resonated with me. Especially their historic presentation of feminine themes.

It's hard to describe exactly what about it I have found refreshing, but I think it's while the West sometimes has a tendency to congregate around a certain take on femininity (often taking the form of an explicit denouncement of traditionally feminine themes and expressions), Kpop on the other hand to a large extent still put forth more feminine fare. And while some can argue kpop is as confining in its expression of femininity as any Western ideology (likely true), from my perspective as an American, kpop's "alternative" view was absolutely a breath of fresh air.

I miss stuff like this.

Another thing to mention is that perhaps a lot of the issue is that so many of the "girl crush" songs can be reduced to a constant theme.


Some variation of:

"I'm a bad ass Queen. I don't need no man."


Which is perfectly awesome.

But after a while can feel distinctly one note.

FX was a good example of doing girl crush but being able to not hit that same note every time. They were decidedly diverse in their output even though much of it fell under a common "girl crush" grouping.

I am a Lullet ( a Cherry Bullet fan) and the song is really good. I have no problem with it but I also began to love them because of their cohesive and original project : a cute girl group with a video game concept and a musical signature which suits this concept now they are a bit too much like the others current rookie groups for my taste.

I just haven't been able to get into Everglow. They are just too IN YOUR FACE like BlackPink They are just too gangsta for me lol. Itzy continues to be my next gen f(x). I'm all in with this group. As long as they dont go too far like 2NE1 or 4Minute.

Great take though. I hadn't even thought about this concept being too American but it is. Kpop was unique cause it was it's own thing with a splash of American influence. Now it's almost all American influence.

Really makes me miss Crayon Pop even more. Nobody in America was jumping around with helmets on. They were original.

What annoys me more is that some groups aren't fit for that kind of concept, yet the producers insist, sigh.

But what about Sistar/AOA sexy? Will that ever comeback?

For me Cherry Bullet definitely my favorite gg comeback so far. I don't really care about the concept as long as I love the songs. Some group I prefer their more cutesy songs, while other groups I prefer their more girl crush type songs.
