I looooove Tag Tag Tag :)

OK I've just relistened to Last Festival and here are my new thoughts!

I can see where you feel like it fits into their discography well as a more sentimental song, but honestly not counting the lyrics, the instrumentation, composition and so on really don't feel that sentimental to me. I like the song more than my first listen, but I still think it's boring, without much to keep my interest even for a subdued song--Crazy Like That, on the other hand, while it's also low-key, has cool and interesting instrumentation and is more melodic so it keeps my interest more. And I honestly always thought of TWS's sound as pop-rock or pop-rock-adjacent, so I'd expect something more sentimental from them to be more in the vein of Congratulations by DAY6 for example (although probablsomewhat less rocky than that song) assuming they didn't go full ballad. But then maybe I just don't like afrobeats.

I def recommend the b-sides to Crazy Like That! That entire album was on my best of 2023 list, although TBH 2023 was not my favourite year of K-pop if I remember correctly, at least for new releases. 2024 I've liked a lot better, aside from neither of my faves releasing anything except OSTs and solos for SNSD. (I really only liked Letter To Myself and Unstoppable out of the SNSD solos this year anyway.) But anyways, I think the whole Liminality EP:DREAM album has a really cool vibe and I listen to it a lot.

I do agree that G.B.T.B. is a really weird song, but it's my really weird song <3. I feel like a ton of people hate it, and it's definitely toward the bottom of my VRVR title track ranking, but I still really like its verses and so on, and even though I'm not a noise music girl, it stand out as a pretty good (like 7ish out of 10) example of noise music. But I will say I think the b-sides on that album really outshined G.B.T.B. (ESPECIALLY So Gravity) even though none of them were really title track material in my opinion. HOWEVER, the Strong Dragon remix of G.B.T.B.... absolutely nasty. I learned to trust him after their next couple of comebacks which he produced were good, but for that to be his first introduction to the fandom? I can't stand it. To this day it's still the one official release (not counting OSTs you can't buy in America) from VRVR that I don't own either physically or on iTunes.

I guess what's so jarring about TWS's concept change (and similar ones like CSR's) is that it A) feels like they hadn't "aged out" of their prior concept or whatever, or even tired it out--they still had a long time and some different potential experimentations and switch-ups within their concept left before it got old and B) it felt entirely disconnected from their prior music. VRVR, for example, had Tag Tag Tag as a kind of transition between their new jack swing and their darker music, and GFRIEND had the more rock-ish Navillera before they released the darker Fingertip with a relatively similar sound. If I'm going to accept the change I feel like I at least need preparation, you know?

I STILL think Crown was TXT's peak. I LOVED THAT SONG!! So quintessentially 2019 boy group music in the best way possible. The rest of their 2019 music I liked (although Cat and Dog has never been a favourite) but pretty much everything else has felt so different that I can't really get behind it.

I do really like The Bias List! I actually check most new releases out through his blog these past few months, I just haven't found a lot of new groups I love suuuper recently. But now ZB1 is changing that!! I wanna watch through like a guide to them or something soon. I'm living for them!!

Did you ever see that video of VRVR performing Tag Tag Tag for Moon Jae In back when he was president? I was SO freaking proud then bc our boys finally got noticed. :) It's also just so random! Like how they performed at that Korean Embassy concert thingie in Germany last summer. Also like the 50 times they've apparently gone viral for random things, like when Yeonho was "that cute guy behind Rose" or when Yongseung got kicked in the balls on Belbelland. (I still think about that moment a lot LOLLLLL)

Look afrobeats is a hard genre to pull off imo and I don't think K-pop acts do it well. It could easily be the bias towards TWS or the fact that the writing carries it so much. We can agree to disagree on this one lmao. And selfishly I'm not on the day6 bandwagon so I do not want TWS going anywhere near that just yet.

I'm with you on 2023, it wasn't my favourite year too. I think this year has been better for niches but I don't like a lot of the 'hits' that have come out this year. I think each year is about the same it's just whether the big groups have been good compared to the smaller groups. I will listen to the crazy like that EP and get back to you on it <3

To be fair I don't think TWS has changed their concept just more the sound, but I do agree with CSR not growing out of it. I think Seventeen on the other hand grew out of it well (despite their concept changes being jarring), went from these young fresh people to cool yet still bright then DARKNESS. Preparation is the key, though I think if the song is good enough it doesn't really matter. Gfriend's 2020 (I like to call it their renaissance) had like no signal of what it would change to but it what was meant to be musically exploring, see where they could go, before they got SPLIT UP SOURCE YOU USELESS PIECE OF SHIT! Happy they're coming back :3

I totally get that. TXT's dream chapter star still remains their peak (which would be bad, calling their debut 'peak'). I think what's interesting about the group though is how they've morphed throughout the years. It's fascinating to watch and I think that's why I'm a big fan despite not liking every release. I somehow connect with it, either positively or negatively, but I still connect with it.

You've read Thebiaslist's top 10?? I'm not surprised there are so many TWS songs oml!!! Zb1 are great but I'm warning you that contract renewal is next year, so they may or may not stay together. The biggest reason why I don't consider myself a fan is because of that :( If they renew I may become a fan.

I'm honestly happy that a group as small as verivery has seem to done well within the larger fandom and Korea, even if they aren't promoted that much. LIKE DANCING FOR THE PRESIDENT!?!?!? SLAYYY!!!

OK first off, sorry for not replying earlier! I got sick with the cold from Hell that kept me off-line (except for rotting on YouTube all day) for a while and then the new semester started, so I'm only just now settling back into my groove.

Maybe a different interpretation of Afrobeats would be more to my tastes or something? TWS's is the only afrobeats song I've heard so I don't really know much about the genre as a whole.

I think I might honestly like some of 2024's hits more, at least on the boy group side. (Although come to think of it, I do quite like the NewJeans easy listening type sound, even if it's nothing special in a lot of interpretations. Also, the only boy group hits I can remember from 2023 right now are from Jungkook's solo album, and I really didn't like what I heard of that, but I digress.) But neither year stands out as much better in any front except for the bright boygroups gaining a member this last year. I honestly don't listen to too many of the hits anyways, unless something interesting comes across my YouTube homepage like a new boygroup debut. I only really listen to hits that are part of trends I like, so I listened to some of ILLIT's music since they're in a similar vein to NewJeans in a way, and I also especially listened to (was it How Sweet? whatever song NewJeans did that was new jack swing). I'm very tired rn if you couldn't tell LOL.

I guess only time will tell if TWS actually change their concept. I'll admit that on relistening, I think Last Festival has grown on me some, but I still don't think it hits the spot for me that their prior releases have---but let's agree to disagree, like you said. :P

I'm still so sad GFRIEND split up! I thought Season of Memories was quite good, but just think what we could've had! I do really like some of VIVIZ's early music, though---I'm pretty sure they just do dark concepts right now and those aren't normally my thing---and I remember when they first redebuted I saw comments saying that Bop Bop (and to a certain extent Loveade) felt like continuations of MAGO, but a bit brighter, and I've always saw them that way. Bop Bop is still a bop bop! (I'll see myself out.)

I totally feel that! Maybe that'll be the same with TWS for me. Like I still don't love Last Festival, but I felt a strong reaction to it, which I like, and I'm really growing to care about the group.

Honestly, I'm kind of willing to risk ZB1 breaking up soon. They're the first group in a while that have a solid catalog that I like but also have a relatively active fandom, and I just quite like them so far. Although I'm not sure how I feel yet about Doctor Doctor---what do you think? I'm also seeking something to help temporarily fill the Verivery-shaped void in my heart, especially since I don't really use social media so I don't have much way or interacting with the fandom. (And what I do use, like YouTube and occasionally Reddit, has no real activity in the Verrer fandom.) Speaking of VERIVERY, it's only a month and a bit before Dongheon gets discharged! AAH!!! Maybe now we'll finally have a comeback! I know that Jelpi has never known how to manage two groups at the same time without screwing everything up, but maybe they'll realize that Verivery are in it for the long term (I remember them saying they wanted to continue as a group, so fingers crossed they'll renew next year---but I don't know about Minchan) and EVNNE are just temporary. (Unless they renew. Honestly, maybe I should get into EVNNE. Their concept seems like I might really like them, but I've just never checked them out for some reason.) Of course, I've also heard of rumours that they have a new group in the works... IDK, I just really really want a VERIVERY comeback! Aaand maybe Hoyoung will come off hiatus now that Dongheon's going to be back?

By the way, I'm still really surprised that Jelpi didn't take this year-plus-long hiatus to give any of the members sub-units or anything. I can see how a solo debut would be pretty time-consuming and money-consuming, but I thought a subunit single or something could've been done pretty low-key to keep the fans happy in the meantime. I don't know. Maybe it's just because VIXX and Gugudan both had subunits that I kind of expect it for VRVR? But I guess subunits are way less popular these days. Which I think is kind of a shame, because I've always dreamed of a rock-themed VRVR subunit---maybe with Yongseung and either Gyehyeon or Yeonho? I think Yongseung has really suited the rock concepts they've done. I think Yeonho might have a bit of a rock-ier voice, but I think Gyehyeon also has vibes that really fit the concept and a pretty good voice for it, and I feel like his voice would fit better with Yongseung's in a duet. Now, my REAL pipe dream is a Minchan solo debut, with either a guitar-heavy sound (especially acoustic guitar b-sides!) or something kind of reminiscent of Lights by Kim Jonghyeon from NU'EST. I just love Minchan's voice so much!! And I think he totally has the presence and everything for it as well. Honestly, if he hadn't gone on hiatus I would think he would've been the first pick of the members to make a solo debut, but I could just be bias-ed. (See what I did there? I kill myself.)

But I am really glad that they've done so well for themselves so far. I remember back when From Now came out and didn't do well, I think there might have been disbandment rumours at the time? I'm not sure, it's been so long. But I wonder what direction they would've gone in an alternate timeline where From Now did well? I think Tag x3's b-side Mystery Light seemed a lot like it could've been intended for a third release with their original concept, although I think it fits well enough with Tag x3. (Not like Tap Tap and its b-side Motive... they could've just switched it out or added another track, even though it was the previewed track from their previous album. I would've killed for something that fit a bit more to make the album feel a bit more cohesive, but oh well. At least we still got Tap Tap out of it! No joke, I think for the first year that song was out I listened to it an average of once a day. Though I think most of that was probably in the first few months. I was OBSESSED.)

But I digress. I keep meaning to buy some ZB1 songs on iTunes for my iPod but I haven't yet. Do you have any b-side recs for me? Toodles!
