With this decade coming to a near end, it is time to look back on some of the best musical pieces it has provided us with. The decade is marked by fantastic songs with the rise of many creative artists. It's a diverse list including songs varying in sound and themes but their agelessness is a factor they all have in common. So prepare yourselves for a deep nostalgic dive into the past with the 50 best songs of the 2010s.

50. Gone - Charli XCX & Christine & The Queens (2019)

Changing the game of pop music, Charli XCX releases her long-awaited third full-length LP, 'Charli', with the anthemic lead single "Gone".
The song is bold with heavy metallic PC synths forming the backdrop for Charli's & Christine's euphoric vocals, & offering us a fresh perspective on PC music.
The song is about feeling lost & alone in a crowd of people, that feeling of loneliness despite being among people, caring about the general crowd's words & how they affect us.
The feeling is accentuated by the gargantuan character of the song, making Charli XCX a formidable force in pop music today.
PC music is the future of pop music with patrons like Charli XCX furthering the movement.

49. Geyser - Mitski (2018)

Another anthemic song on the list, the song starts off with an alarming church organ leading to soft vocals cooing words of longing & appreciation, then blossoming into this gigantic piece with full-blown robust flavor with a celebratory tone.
A tasteful lead single, deserving of being on the list for that wonderful build-up.

48. Top Of The World - Kimbra (2017)

Kimbra showed off her versatility through her angsty and victorious song "Top Of The World". It's a minimal and songl track consisting of pop and R&B elements - slightly venturing into the hip hop genre. Kimbra's vocals are surrounded by the gritty instrumental and wispy background sounds. The song builds up with all its elements coming together to form a chaotic bridge. From the heavy percussion, to the haunting bass, to the empowering lyrics and the hypnotic chants, everything about this song screams perfection.

47. Give Up - FKA Twigs (2014)

"Give up"- a bright and ethereal sounding song, sung by FKA twigs in a whimsical tone as she presents herself as a saviour to her lover.
Despite it being a rather optimistic song, anxiety seems to be hovering over it.
The song is beaming with shimmering synths having a surrealistic feel to it.
With this song, FKA twigs has set her mark in the musical industry as an artist with a distinctive style.

46. Wave - Beck (2014)

An orchestral affair of a song - vocals paired with lush strings, chords reminiscent of Björk's legendary "Hunter", with lyrics talking about isolation, literally,
the song never overstays its welcome, sounding really short, despite being a three-minute piece.

45. Colligere - Julia Holter (2018)

Julia continues her musical journey on the classical route with "Colligere" which is an embodiment of a majestically exotic sound. The song is filled with melodical richness and the vocals resemble that of a church choir with the strings complementing them. It doesn't follow a constant pattern and surprises the listener with every twist.
The album has a concept of being in an "Aviary", being bombarded by the birds' shrieking, experiencing it first-hand & the song is a total songification of that, as the strings attack you from all directions.

44. Kick In The World - Harunemuri (2018)

The song requires patience as it starts off rather slow in the beginning, building up, leading to its climax consisting of guitar and drums, a rock'n'roll instrumental and shouts of "Kick in the world". It features an aggressive and blood pumping chorus making it an epic and adventurous ride for the listener's ears.

43. Give Me Five - Aseul (2016)

Glitzy, bright, & glittering in its own right, "Give Me Five" features kick drums & ambient synthpop instrumentals, making it a really calming listen suited for long drives. There's a vocal sample from "Gypsy Woman" by Crystal Waters in the song, the ethereal "la, la, la"s which complement the already ephemeral instrumental, & Aseul's voice, rich with reverb, glides over it, making it an increasingly satisfying listen as well.

42. Kakete Ageru - Daoko (2015)

Setting her first foot into the musical industry of Japan, Daoko released the title track "Kakete Ageru" from her debut album simply named after herself. With this release, the Japanese rapper has painted a cute picture for herself with an underlying mysterious persona. Not being entirely hiphop, the song is a fusion of funk & pop elements with a fantastic beat and flow. Daoko's light and clear voice marries the instrumental, adding a magical and fairytale-like effect to the song.

41. Lemonade - Cocorosie (2010)

With a sorrowful opening piano & witchy voices, the Casady sisters create this sparse yet varied soundscape. There's a play between the light & the dark, chiaroscuro is well-employed in the song & the sonically bright chorus is in great contrast to the darker verses. There's a great use of different instruments, from the horns to the synth strings to the timpani, they blend flawlessly with each other.

40. Queen Of Peace - Florence + The Machine (2015)

Horns, horns, & more horns, with driving percussion & strings, makes for a perfectly coherent orchestral pop gem. Florence's dark vocals float over the beautiful instrumental, providing a sense of emergency that is needed for the song. It's a great effort by the baroque pop band & deserving of being on this list.

39. t - iamamiwhoami (2013)

Muffled, that is what this song is. It's largely subdued with incoherent sections interspersed among each other. Jonna Lee's vocals on the song are heavily edited, giving one the impression of an old music recording from the 60s, but this is due to technological advancement not lack of it. It sounds like a disjointed jumble with alarming fast percussion samples that change every now & then in rhythm, which keeps the listener's ears engaged. Splashes of gritty bass-like synths give the song more dimension. It ends on a fade-out which makes you want more of it.

38. Deus In Absentia - Ghost (2015)

"Deus In Absentia", a chaotic and sorrowful hymn masterpiece about the absence of a God. It starts off by the sound of a clock's ticking- as if to signal the nearing end of something-leading to a soaring chorus consisting of piano keys, a sea of voices and a hypnotizing chant-esque style. The song continues with its rock heavy elements before coming to an end with fading vocals emphasising the theme of hopelessness.

37. The Balrog - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (2017)

The Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard continue with their experimental sound with the release of "The Balrog"- a song off their album "Murder Of The Universe". The song features a spoken word narrative and an apocalyptic tone giving it a sinister feel. The instrumental is laced with guitars and acidic electronic noises as the tale of a battle is told. The song has a distinctive sound of its own making it stand out among the releases of 2010s.

36. Elephant - Tame Impala (2012)

Another psychedelic release in our list, Tame Impala have cemented themselves as that one band whose name & the word "psychedelic" go hand in hand.
The song, courtesy of its use in advertisements, has been popularised worldwide, making it one of the most successful songs by the band. A song filled with a heavy bassline, retro synths, guitars, hard rock riffs, drums having a jazz-rock and acidic tint to them. "Elephant" refuses to have a constant pattern as rhythmic shifts and tangents can be found throughout. The excellence of this masterpiece is heightened by an unexpected guitar session midway through the song. The glitchy instrumental features abrasive bass guitars & colorful synths along with some heavy percussion, that make it a perfect recipe for an acid trip.

35. You're Not The One - Sky Ferreira (2013)

With nuances of David Bowie's music, this single off Ferreira's 2013 LP "Night Time, My Time" is an affair of guitar & punching drums - Ferreira's explosive vocals add an interesting power to it. Soaring in her mid-register, Ferreira delivers us what could be her best vocal performance on the entire album. It's a wonderful song that plays well with the instruments its given & gets a deserving spot on the list.

34. Hypnos - Chelsea Wolfe (2015)

Surrounded by the darkness of hopelessness, "Hypnos" dabbles in acoustic guitars pairing well with Wolfe's haunting vocals, creating a chilling atmosphere as the song progresses. The eeriness and the melancholic nature of the song are conveyed through the simple melody and the theme of isolation with the lyrics being a representation of continuous struggle. The song sounds deprived of any colour giving it a unique grey identity of its own.

33. The Mysterious Vanishing Of Electra - Anna Von Hausswolff (2018)

Cathartic, this is the dark anthem we all needed in our lives. Ringing guitars paired with haunting vocals that rise up to the 6th octave in the form of releasing screams, the song sticks with you as it paints a picture of moroseness & morbidity.

32. You Won't Be Missing That Part Of Me - Melody's Echo Chamber (2012)

"You Won't Be Missing That Part Of Me" is a song off Melody's Echo Chamber's debut album. The dreampop piece is filled with synths, drums and electronic sounds creating a fuzzy atmosphere. The song slowly flourishes into a melancholic masterpiece seeming to propel into another cosmos. The song is just an addition to the list of Melody's Echo Chamber's distinctive and quality works.

31. Circumambient - Grimes (2012)

"Circumambient"- a track featured on the experimental synth pop artist Grimes' album "Visions". It's an energetic song with overlapping synths, an echoing beat and Grimes's trademark shrill vocals. Varying sounds come together to form this electronic sounding piece of excellence.

30. Quietude - Laurel Halo (2018)

Glitchiness & ambience pair up to give us a song worth mentioning in this list.
Weird chords, an eerie atmosphere, & clicking-clacking instruments forms the background for this gorgeous instrumental piece that keeps you anticipating for more.

29. Werewolf - Fiona Apple (2012)

Starting from rather simple, delicate piano keys and ending with voices of screaming children in the background, Fiona Apple's "Werewolf" surely doesn't bore its listeners.
In the said breakup song, Fiona draws comparisons of her lover with various creatures as the lyrics aid to paint a beautiful image in one's head. This sombre-hued masterpiece is in a league of its own making it well worthy of its spot on this list.

28. Utopia - Björk (2017)

Björk creates her own musical utopia on this song as lush flute sections come mesh with twittering percussion & otherworldly avian sounds, & of course Björk's own robusto soprano vocals adding an element of grounding to the Earth. It's a mellifluous, melodramatic affair & is a perfect middle-Earth-like terrain of a song that reminds you of the Elves in Tolkien's Legendarium.

27. Hurry On Home - Sleater Kinney (2019)

The punk rock high priestesses are back with another banger of a song. With St. Vincent on the production side of things, you are bound to expect something creative & new. From the heavy percussion to the punk vocals to the random edited noises I'm the background to the punk guitar riffs & challenging lyrics, the song promotes the perfect vibe that a punk song should have making it the quintessential punk rock song.

26. New Vectors - Iglooghost (2018)

Iglooghost's music is known for its technical complexity and this track is no exception with the unexpected instrumental shifts and abrupt pace changes throughout. It is filled with synths, jolting rhythms, electronic sounds and has an overall glitchy feel. Iglooghost creates an impressionist painting of a song with the song; the mechanics of music are highlighted in the song with heavy usage of samples creating this flawless collage that has been blended to perfection. Probably the most melodic work yet from Iglooghost, the chords of the song are simply irresistible & it also consists a sample from fellow album-mate "Clear Tamei", the catchy gibberish that Iglooghost spouts. Then an automated voice takes over splitting the instrumental into shards, giving this more industrial feel. An artist to look out for.

25. Not The News - Thom Yorke (2019)

Thom Yorke creates the middle ground for glitchy electronics & classical music - "Not The News" is a perfect embodiment of that. With an ambient, cold, dystopian instrumental backing it up, Thom Yorke sings about diverse things, even violin sliding techniques. Then lush cellos blanket the song in somnolent warmth, as Thom keeps singing in a rather lowkey manner. The strings end the song in a classical manner with voices fading in & out, giving the song the much needed proper closure.

24. Miami - Cate Le Bon (2019)

"Miami"-a soothing track off Cate le Bon's fifth album "Reward". The music has a delicate melody reminiscent of warm and pleasant sunlight. The song can be best described as nourishing and uplifting with its spacey sound. It gives a delightful sense of freedom seeming to invite the listener on an adventure in a magical world of Cate's vivid imagination.

23. Home - Sephine Llo (2017)

"Home" - a song by indie artist Sephine Llo is a mixed bag of sounds with the glitching radio, the collective ukuleles, & Sephine's own heady voice lulls you into a sense of security & then blossoms wit strings pairing with clicking percussion. Sephine's vocal dexterity in the song shows as she goes as high as A5 with ease.
It's a beautifully produced dramatic piece of music.

22. Transgender - Crystal Castles (2012)

"Transgender” having an ethereal and ceremonial start carries on with ghostly vocals and light synths giving a feel of distortion. Crystal Castles seems to have succeeded with their attempt of the production of an eerie and murky masterpiece. The song seems like the auditory form of broken memories continuing to tell a tale as it progresses.
It's a must-listen.

21. High Alice - Jenny Hval (2019)

Having a 90s sound to it, featuring heavy synths and repetitive beats, "High Alice" is an enchanting and unsettling track that lures the listener further down this rabbit hole of excellence.
The maximalist song gives rise to alluring imagery inside the mind which seems to form an odd universe of its own. This Psychedelic piece can't be just missed out on.

20. Exhumed - Zola Jesus (2017)

Emergent cellos cry over an instrumental as black as tar, that segways into an even darker tom-tom section where the feeling of the song is amplified.
The twittering sound effects add to the haunted feeling, & the song succeeds in providing a cathartic experience to the listener.

19. Atom Dance - Björk, Antony Hegarty (2015)

Pizzicato strings overlay on gauzy percussion & Björk's beautifully flawed voice washes over it.
The song is a one-of-a-kind experience - lasting for a whole eight minutes. Antony Hegarty comes in with a musically section painting the previously colorful picture grey. "No one is a lover alone", they both sing over the string-rich instrumental, & Antony Hegarty brings with her voice a tasteful modulation. The song ends with myriads of voices singing on top of a glitchy background.

18. It's Okay To Cry - SOPHIE (2018)

Delicate, dainty, & all things soft, SOPHIE coos over a relatively quiet instrumental with a calming, warm synth & bass zoning in & out. The song finally builds up & blossoms into this percussive giant that feels very much like euphoria.

17. Midnight City - M83 (2011)

Thick synths come in coalescence with a deep, husky voice to deliver what seems to be one of the best synthpop songs of this decade. A saxophone takes over in the end & the vocals rise up higher delivering a glorious climax. Truly a beautiful song.

16. Monument - Röyksopp & Robyn (2014)

Ambient yet not fully, dark yet not fully, introspective yet not fully, this song about existing & establishing proof of your existence after your death has been executed with dedication, stretching over an almost ten-minute instrument. Robyn's voice on the song is soft & lowkey, as if singing words of inquisition to the listener. The ambient sonic texture sounds like an aural illusion, that gives us a feeling of being lost when we are still very much grounded to the Earth, to what we know. The blurry saxophone comes in later in the song singing the same melody giving the song its deserved closure.

15. I Know Places - Lykke Li (2011)

Acoustic in the beginning, Li offers words of reassurance to her lover - "I know places we can go babe".The instrumental is smooth & comforting, with a sense of security, offering you warmth. The acoustic nature of the song completely changes as enveloping ambient synths & transcendental guitars arrive, filling the song with a feeling of being lost. It's a tremendous song that's definitely worth a listen.

14. Blackstar - David Bowie (2016)

Not many have faced death as bravely as David Bowie & his album "Blackstar" is proof of that. Occult, witchy, & everything dark & unsettling, yet calming at the same time, as calming as death. The song can be largely divided into two sections - one section focusing on minor keys & hence, a darker instrumental & the other being glitchy, in a major key, sounding happier - but that's just an illusion to hide the darkness of death.
However, Bowie accepts death with open arms.
"I'm a black star", Bowie sings about himself as a dead star.
The soprano saxophones are thin & glistening, even distorted at times, giving a disorienting feel. If someone ever wants to achieve death without fear & is in need of inspiration, this is the perfect song.

13. Alterlife - Rina Sawayama (2017)

Sounding straight out of Street Fighter or Tekken, this futuristic song offers a great perspective on pop music. Sawayama's glamorous voice glides dexterously over the very much reverb'ed instrumental. The song is wonderfully executed with guitar riffs in the heart of the song, & a modulation before the last chorus, that gives it more upliftment, fitting the song's theme. A must listen.

12. Run Away With Me - Carly Rae Jepsen (2015)

Cute, innocent, & everything sweet - that's the kind of love we get to see in Jepsen's music. An irresistible synthpop song with an explosive chorus & a saxophone supporting it, it's the perfect banger for late nights in the city.

11. Hang On - Yukari (2014)

Dream pop reaches the peak of its beauty with Yukari (now promoting under the name "Aseul"). This song is particularly close to my(La_mort_pour_vous') heart as it represents everything cool, mountainous & elegant for me, I(La_mort_pour_vous) used to listen to it on road trips to the Himalayas. The synths are gorgeous, putting you in a stupendous daze. Yukari's airy voice blends with the instrumental too well, giving it an ephemeral feel. A song I(La_mort_pour_vous) feel really close to.

10. Reins - Chelsea Wolfe (2013)

Sinister, dark, & demonic - that is what Wolfe's music sounds like, for the most part, & this song is no different. Laced with the sound of sorrow, & the remnants of regret, Wolfe's extraterrestrial voice pairs up wonderfully with the instrumental which keeps building. The instrumental fades in & out giving it the feeling of a final boss in a video game reaching closer to you. The song reaches a fantastic climax with the piano playing a rather foreshadowing hymn.

9. Daydreaming - Radiohead (2016)

Stately, elegant, & graceful, this heartfelt song is Radiohead's magnum opus. The piano starting off the song is delicate with a comforting chord progression.
"Dreamers, they never learn", Yorke sings over the sparse instrumental and his voice is accompanied by a certain sleepy lilt. The cellos, that sound like a train's horns, arrive at last giving the song a gorgeous ending.

8. Falling Into Me - Let's Eat Grandma (2018)

Anthemic yet subdued, robotic yet earthly, "Falling Into Me", off Let's Eat Grandma's project "I'm All Ears" is an absolute aural delight. With strong lyricism & a clear cut electronic instrumental, the song pulses with new life, as if hailing Spring. The song evokes myriads of emotions in one, with its sentimental chords & maximalist instrumental. The bridge is one of my favourite sections in music ever, it does exactly what a bridge should do, a build-up in preparation for the final chorus. It's just an unbelievably fantastic song that needs a listen from everyone.

7. Divers - Joanna Newsom (2015)

Harpist & lyrical legend, Joanna Newsom, knew she released a masterpiece when she released the album "Divers". The eponymous title song features her trademark sharp with baroque instruments like a ringing piano, music boxes, & flutes. The song is littered with interesting chord changes that totally engage the listener, while still maintaining a repetitive character, introducing new instruments at every other point. The song blooms into this massive delicate piece at its heart with all the instrumental coming together in unison, creating a utopic soundscape.

6. I Miss You This Much - yeule (2017)

"I Miss You This Much"- a melancholic piece off the Ambient Pop artist Yeule's EP "Coma". The song features Yeule's trademark floating vocals over a light instrumental creating a gorgeous atmosphere of ambience. The song has a ghostly and hollow feel to it as if mourning the loss of something. The gentle and dreamy piece sounds like a sad lullaby, a masterpiece that can't be simply missed out on.

5. Black Rainbow - Hilary Woods (2018)

"Black Rainbow"- a musky ballad off Hillary Woods' masterpiece of an album "Colt". There is a sense of isolation in this track as the vocals and piano slowly detach and seem to float off into an ambient world of their own. The song tackles grief and abandonment with little hesitation. Despite it being melancholic in nature, the song sounds bright in a few moments. It is a free ticket to the entry of a vivid dream world.

4. 4 Degrees - ANOHNI (2015)

Starting off with drums and horns, "4 degrees" progresses as ANOHNI paints the image of an apocalyptic world through the lyrics as she wishes death upon the planet. The fiery song is an embodiment of hopelessness with the anticipation of chaos and destruction making it downright chilling and devastating. It's an irresistible trip into a dark territory.

3. Kill V. Maim - Grimes (2015)

The main track "Kill V. Maim" off the album "Art Angels" is filled with roars, high pitched vocals, electronic noises and a demon-esque chorus. It is a cyberpunk-themed, electropop piece of excellence. The listener is taken on a crazy trip through Grimes's imaginative mind as she shatters any boundaries through the ferocious song.

2. Conceptual Romance - Jenny Hval (2016)

Reveling in its gentleness, this song off Jenny Hval's "Blood Bitch" LP is a healing agent to the ears.
It talks about unrequited love & vampires in the most sentimental way, expressing a certain sadness that fills us up on rejection. The song is smooth & buttery, & a relatable tune, with Jenny's airy falsetto gliding on top of the instrumental. It's a brilliant piece of work by Jenny Hval that propels her artistry into another dimension.

1. Maxim's II - Julia Holter (2013)

Making its way to the top of list is Julia Holter's game-changing piece of work, "Maxim's II", off her 2013 LP "Loud City Song". The song plays around wit silence to give your ears a much needed rest after the instrumental overload.
"We do not dance a story for you", sings Holter on top of a classical-jazz instrumental consisting of horns, strings, talking about how people around us are always judging us & how our everyday actions are a source of entertainment to them.
The song then segways into this gorgeous horn section where the horns sing their hearts out in mellifluous pleasure, which is somewhat distorted sounding at parts too.
It's a perfect recipe for an eye-catching song that fills you with interest.
The power the song holds is unimaginable.

It has been an all-giving decade providing us with bountiful music, & most of the music we listen to has been offered by this decade.
The releases have been diverse, delivering us with some great objective experimentation along with eye-catching pop tunes.
It has been an unforgettable decade for music that we cherish with our hearts.

Strong choices :nakypog: I recognise many of the tracks there.

I guess it was impossible to only have one song from Jenny Hval and Julia Holter :sj_weary:
I love how Aseul was on there twice, once as Yukari and another time as Aseul.
And I'm (pleasantly) surprised Carly is that high.

You're listening to these songs on Spotify now. :pepesmug:
And yes, it was impossible to have only one song from these artists after all the gems they've put out. I wish I could do a "Top 50 Albums" list. That would cover more songs.

Carly is a lovely artist. The real pop princess.

Don't you expose me Mort :pepesmug: I haven't listened to David Bowie much.
It would be pretty difficult to do an album list, with so many great albums. If you have time you should definitely put together a list.

Definitely recommend you to listen to more Bowie. :sanapray:
His music is timeless, and as much as I despise the term "classic", it's very much what his music is.
I don't think I have the time for that. :pepecry2:
Speaking of year-end or decade-end lists, the Press should do them too. :pepesmug:
