"Under the military administration in 1970s, rock music and its subculture were classified as a depraved youth culture and restricted. After the Korean Fifth Republic, the censorship policies under military government had been abolished and rock music became a mainstream genre in South Korea until end of 1980s."

I honestly didn't know this, but it would explain why Korea is not a fan of rock music and have only recently been unbanned.

There could be a stigma about rock music from this but there have been a couple of hits from CN Blue and N.Flying had Rooftop recently so while it is possible to get a hit with rock, it's kinda in the same vein as soloists with no group background where it's rare.

Honestly I think N.Flying might pull heads out of peoples arses if they continue like they are. They have a tendency to catch netizen eyes for the most random of reasons. I would also signal out Day6 but WTF is JYP doing with them.

If you go back to Hong Ki's old files he mentions many of times rock is pretty much dead in Korea around the time Ft Island started. Yeah, there are rock bands but not any out front like kpop groups.

Edit: Special heads up to Heechul because face it he's probably the only reason Ft Island didn't collapse early years

I'm not a historian when it comes to Rock music (or even a historian at all), but wasn't rock (in the 70s) still with the ethos of fight the power and civil resistance and disobedience... I could see why, if this were the case, why it would have been viewed negatively in SK.. Plus, it would have been much easier to stereotype rock in those days based on all the deviant behavior r&r musicians were engaging in (i.e. Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin)... But as mores shifted, the attitude toward rock should too, but when stereotypes are formed it tends to take a long time for them to shift. But it sucks that K-rock groups continue to suffer because of this.

Yeah I think what rock really needs is someone to make an big enough impact to get Korea into rock groups as a whole as that is what started making the sexy concept popular which gave us some great girl groups.

This is why as the only female K-pop choreographic rock group, Dreamcatcher need to stick with their hard rock sound and succeed.

Note a lot of this is in my opinion:

I think we are unappreciative how far rock in Korea has come. Remember Ft Island was the first band to stand up with kpop groups. They debuted in 2007, yes it's been more then 10 years but look how far we've come. Ft Island took off, then CN Blue came. It became a bit stagnant with only two bands at the head. And i want to give a special appreciation to every girl group who started out band who's companies took it away to become popular. They play a role as well getting this movement restarted.

In 2013 we got N.Flying but they wern't really having that omf to it that appealed to Korea. They where there, there was fans but it wouldn't be later years that they would have impact. I think the true impact after Ft and CN was in 2014 which brought Day6 from JYP and they caught many eyes. They continue and I think they could be more of a force if JYP did more with them. He's almost as incompetent as FNC CEO. FNC being only the ""Big"" company that supports bands before JYP took a risk with Day6. IMHO I think JYP could be a threat to FNC if he would flaunt Day6 more.

Yes we've had rock groups like Drug Resturant, Royal Pirates, Honeyst, the Rose and so on but lets be honest in Korea they are a failure. Despite how internationally loved the Rose is they still busk in Korea. But the fact one day if Ft and CN remain together through and after military there will be 4 bands can really liven the waters. At one time having 4 bands on stage potentially with kpop groups probably seemed silly. Now in a few years it might be reality with hopefully more bands.

Well in general rock hasn't been in fashion quite while. When I was growing up rock was pretty much everywhere, it was more popular than pop within my age group. Alternative and emo rock especially. I feel like Korea kinda missed the rock train (and there were historical reasons behind that) and hopped straight to pop, hip hop and edm train, which left rock as small niche. There is still indie bands that people appreciate lot like NELL.

I think it's pretty interesting compared to Japan where rock was rly popula raround early 00s. Similar as kpop has it's own flavor within pop, Japan also invented jrock and visual kei. Lot of Korea's first idol and rock fusions were inspired by visual kei after all. You had idol groups that even weren't a band having rock songs and visual kei inspired fashion like TVXQ. It was very short lived though.

N.Flyings 2013 debut was only in Japan, they didn't debut in Korea until 2015 and along with Day6s debut, JYP also gave us the Wonder Girls reboot which although short lived, it did consist of a band concept to help break that possible stigma as everyone knew Wonder Girls already.

The progress they have made now is definitely good progress since Rooftop climbed up the charts meaning people discovered it after its initial release and liked it which is huge for a genre that is not mainstream.

If JYP debuted a female band since the public are more into girl groups in non bands then he'd probably make a real dent in the market.

Day6 still had the lead I don't think N.Flying really started running till after Hot Potato

Day6 definitely had a lead since up until April of this year, none of N.Flyings albums broke 10k meanwhile Day6 had broken 60k with their Shoot Me album which was the follow up to their Every Day6 project which rose their sales from 15k to 50k with their Sunrise album and N.Flying broke 40k with their most recent album so they are catching up now..

Hwesung brought them attention when he joined since he ranked pretty highly on Produce 101, I think that's when they started to get attention, and the attention after is because their songs kept the fanbase

No denying Hwesung was their break out piece. I feel if Honeyst would have gotten Hwesung they would have gone the way of Honeyst. CEO also has let N.Flying do more things since Hwesung joined... ... I'm going to bite my tongue with what I feel on that subject.

I think the Western rock bands also derive a lot of their popularity from the whole rock and roll culture associated with it. Whether it be partying, drinking, sex, the rebellious DGAF attitude, the aggression and non conformity, all of this has traditionally made rock stand out, give it a unique image and made a lot of fans gravitate to it. In addition to this, groups have also used rock music to sing about societal issues, the government, war, and a lot of other serious stuff in addition to good ol' rock ballads about love. Although rock music is getting more and more niche in today's age where EDM and hip hop reign supreme, it still has it's loyal fans and I'm willing to bet Korea has a good amount of them too.

However, these fans will mostly stick to those bands too. The K-rock bands we're used to seeing, are far off from what you'd associate with the rock scene generally, so maybe not too many rock fans check them out since it doesn't seem as raw to them. These are groups made by an agency, their music and MVs are also pretty polished, while rock loyalists probably seek something more rough around the edges. All these groups still have a target demo that they appeal to, but I think it's only the surface if we consider just rock music lovers in Korea. Most rock fans probably listen to indie bands, underground artists or stick to Western names.

What I don't really get is why Rock music was banned and Rap music became really popular?
Rock music in the west was associated with drinking, having a rebellious attitude, non-conformity, aggression, etc, but Rap music was also associated with gun violence, crime, rape, etc.
Like Eminem for example mostly rapped about hating and hurting his wife and mother. 50 Cent was shot about 9 times apparently and him having a big feud with Ja Rule.
Yet, Rap music is so popular in Kpop but Rock music isn't.

I guess Korea just missed the rock wave and lacked a defining group/artist to really make it popular. On the other hand, Seo Taiji and the Boys pretty much made hip hop a craze and then later people like Epik High and BigBang popularized it big time too. Also a lot of Korean artists are heavily influenced by Western artists at that time and rock was already on a downward spiral in terms of popularity in the 90s while rap/hiphop was growing, so it could be a combination of all these things.
