this is something ingrained in chinese culture and mythology - the Buddhist concepts of doing good deeds and reincarnation and the like

one of the more famous examples is in the story of the Journey to the West (Monkey King) where the pig character used to be a hevenly marshal or something but he acted inappropriately towards the moon rabbit fairy and was punished to reincarnate as a pig demon lol

(the duck should know all about that)
