I think it's cause he and Azula were raised to compete for their father's attention and love, so when he got banished from the fire nation, he wanted to do everything he could to regain his honor which was basically his father's love.

that's why we see Azula freaking out when her father treats her the same way he treated zuko at the end of the series. because she was scared of ending up like zuko, because ozai manipulated them into thinking that's all that they were worth. if ozai thought bad of them, then they thought that they were themselves disappointments.

yeah, that's true but I think that because azula and zuko were royalty they had more pressure to live up to their father's standards because a whole nation was watching them.

but in terms of azula, I don't think that she's either, I think that she was just raised terribly. she does have emotion and even in the beach episode, we can see that she does have a small piece inside of her that wanted to be treated like a normal teen. she was basically groomed to be a military weapon by her father.

she also just wanted attention from her mother because even her mother said that she was scared of her, which in azulas own words "she thought i was a monster" and that probably hurt her. she thinks that everyone is out to get her because she was raised to be on guard all the time. unfortunately, that ended up being her downfall. mentally yeah she does have some issues but I don't think that she's a psychopath or a sociopath... just some reallllyyyy bad mommy and daddy issues.

i totally get where you are coming from, your way of thinking & reasoning
but, i don't want to sound like a know it all , forgive me if i do, but you totally not realising that all you mentioned
and all you have seen of her = personality disorder
you right about that she became this way because of bad parenting and everything around her but THAT IS EXACTLY what it is , it made her grow up and develop a personality disorder which is exactly why she ended up like she did, personality wise and with her actions

the things she done and said are waaaaay beyond mommy and daddy issues
she lies, manipulates, is willing to kill and harm anyone if they are in her way
that are only a few true indicating factors she is either a sociopath or psychopath (anti social personality disorder)
the makers of avatar portrayed her as a struggling woman but if you take a look at it from psychological view, it is more than obvious she got a personality disorder XD

just youtube her with the term sociopath or psychopath and you can see other people also noticed it

well i am not saying it to put the character down and if we look at all the psychological facts we seen of her in the show, it is pretty much a given she is. if you interested in the psychological side of things, you could look up the signs of how psychologists determine whether you got anti social personality disorder or not. they use a book for that called the DSM 5 to diagnose people with personality disorders. wait ill actually show you an image and see for yourself, whether azula matches the criteria or not xD
