OKAY get ready for a rollercoaster

the main character, Ash Lynx, the young leader of a gang in New York City, he's introduced as a powerful gang leader who runs the basically runs the streets. he discovers this mysterious drug called "Banana Fish," which is linked to the traumatic past of his older brother, Griffin. Griffin who was once a strong soldier, has gone crazy by the drug and now lives in a mental institution. this is where Ash learns that Banana Fish is part of a larger conspiracy involving powerful figures.
so this is where Eiji Okumura, a Japanese photographer's assistant, comes in. he comes to New York from Japan for a photo assignment. he literally witnesses a violent incident involving Ash and becomes accidentally tangled up in the whole mess
Ash investigates further into the Banana Fish drug and discovers that the drug's origins and distribution are deeply tied to organized crime and corrupt politicians. Eiji who was initially a bystander, becomes more involved as he tries to help Ash, despite the dangers. but Eiji’s presence complicates Ash’s life but also provides emotional support, leading to a growing friendship (or romance...) between them.
basically at one part Ash's gang member, who is named Shorter ends up getting kidnapped by a rival gang (the leader of the gang also raped and used Ash as a prostitute when Ash was younger so we hate him)
Ash's dad also kind of hates him for the things that were done to him without his consent. like HE was raped and you're hating HIM??
SO the rival gang ends up injecting banana fish into Shorter and he dies...
this really affects Ash..
so yeah fast forward Ash, Eiji, and the gang get all the evidence needed and try to shut down the rival gang's and the production of Banana Fish.
and a really cute part is that Ash and Eiji start living together in an apartment so taht they can hide from the enemies and they share so many adorable little moments (I LOVE THEM SM)
NOW AT THE END...
Eiji's leaving to go back to Japan and Ash doesn't want to see him off because he thinks he's done a lot to put Eiji in danger and doesn't want to do anymore
Ash recieves a letter from Eiji
and while reading it, he decides he NEEDS to see Eiji. as he's walking to the airport he gets shot by a rival gang member and dies.
