“Hey,” BamBam opens the door with a fleeting smile. “You must be the pool boy.”
The tall boy (BamBam couldn’t help but notice just how long his legs were) nods enthusiastically. “Yeah! I’m here to clean your pool, but I guess you knew that.” BamBam can’t hold back a snort. He’s cute.
“I gathered. Come on back, the pool’s through here.”
As BamBam leads him through the house, he can’t help but notice how big the boy’s eyes got every time they passed by some fancy room. When BamBam can hear him audibly gasp at the chandelier, BamBam turns to shoot him a bright smile and wink. “It comes with the job. Well, not really, I just thought it looked cool.” The boy laughs, and BamBam has a thought running through his head that he just wants to get to know this boy. “What’s your name?”
The boy looks surprised for a split second before smiling even wider. “I’m Kim Yugyeom! I already know your name though, Mr. Bhuwakul.” His pronunciation is a little muddled but BamBam finds it endearing anyway.
BamBam gags playfully, though Yugyeom starts forward in worry. “God, I’m no ‘Mr. Bhuwakul’, you can just call me BamBam.” He notes with pride that Yugyeom scrunches up his nose when he smiles. “The pool’s out this door.”
Yugyeom practically gapes at the aforementioned pool and immediately goes to stand by the edge when BamBam finally opens the side door. “Oh my God, I wasn’t expecting it to be this big,” he breathes out, and BamBam can hardly breathe from holding in his laughter.
“That’s...that’s what she said.” BamBam couldn’t help but make that joke, even as Yugyeom turns to give him a stink-eye. “But seriously, if you need help, just let me know. I usually wouldn’t but I’m kinda bored and you’re kinda cute. I’d love to get wet with you.”
Yugyeom turns red really, really easily, BamBam finds out at that moment. He sputters and looks constipated for a long while, and finally giggles really high-pitched. BamBam smirks, stepping closer while Yugyeom looks away bashfully. He has to stand on his tiptoes to look Yugyeom in the eye, but he doesn’t mind.
Yugyeom finally turns his eyes back to BamBam and squeaks at the proximity, stepping backwards and falling into the pool. Now, BamBam really can’t hold in his laughter, cackling and bending over the pool to try and look for Yugyeom, though with his shaking shoulders and tears brimming, he can’t really see well enough.
“Oh, my God,” BamBam wheezes out, “your fucking face–”
He doesn’t get to laugh long, however, when Yugyeom resurfaces and just pulls hard on the front of BamBam’s shirt, causing the homeowner to fall into the pool with him. It’s BamBam’s turn to glower, but it’s all in good fun. “Dude, my shirt is expensive,” he ribs Yugyeom, nevermind that they just met.
“It comes with the job, doesn’t it?” Yugyeom uses BamBam’s words against him. “Plus, mine’s expensive too!”
BamBam gives Yugyeom’s shirt a once over. “Don't really look it.” Yugyeom pouts.
“To me it is.” BamBam laughs a little, moving forward to touch the wet fabric of the collar.
“I’ll just buy you a new one, then, yeah?”This time, it’s Yugyeom who steps forward, his eyes trained on BamBam. It’s like he’s acting subconsciously, his hands coming up and brushing BamBam’s hair out of his eyes.
And BamBam has no problems with this new development. He’s been known to have a quick hookup back in the big city he lives in all the rest of his year. What difference does it make that it’s his vacation home? BamBam tilts his head up and smiles at Yugyeom, but it seems the other had different plans, jerking his hands away.
“I’m– I’m really sorry, let me just get my tools and get to work, I’m sorry,” Yugyeom blubbers and rushes off, his ears tinted red. BamBam watches with a crooked grin before leisurely getting out of the pool, his shirt dripping onto the concrete. Yugyeom returns, still bashful, and BamBam just waves at him.
“I'll be inside, so feel free to come in and get yourself some lemonade or snacks. I’ll show you where the kitchen is when you do.” BamBam watches with amusement as Yugyeom’s face scrunches up as he mutters a ‘thanks but I don’t think I’ll need it’.
All BamBam does is laugh and head back inside to the air conditioning. Yugyeom may not think so, but most of the time, the pool boys take up BamBam’s offer.
--
“Fuck,” Yugyeom breathes out, finally letting his body sink into the soft bed. “Where do you get your energy?
BamBam smiles teasingly, pulling out and tying the condom before tossing it into the trash by his bed. “Practice.” Yugyeom ignores the answer, instead just pouting and holding out his arms for BamBam to fall into. BamBam indulges the younger, as he always does, cuddling up close and pressing a series of light kisses to the younger’s jaw.
“I’m supposed to be cleaning your pool, you know,” Yugyeom mentions with a quick gasp as BamBam captures the skin of his jaw with sharp canines.
BamBam just mumbles into Yugyeom’s skin, “I’ll pay you overtime, don’t worry about it.” Yugyeom would be staying longer than he had planned, so it all worked out anyway. And the man in BamBam’s arms seems to agree, making no move to actually go do the job he was paid for.
BamBam thinks he might actually fall asleep, Yugyeom’s large frame being comfortable and warm, when the younger one’s quiet voice breaks the silence. “Do you do this to all your pool boys?”
BamBam laughs drowsily against Yugyeom’s chest, hearing the snort that falls out of the taller’s mouth. “Not all, some were married and I hate cheating, and some weren’t gay. And some were lesbian. And some were gross. But when the chance came I never usually turned them down.”
Yugyeom just hums, pressing his nose into BamBam’s hair and just relaxing. BamBam really does almost fall asleep. The sun was shining through the window in just the right place to warm up his back but not uncomfortably, and the soft, even breaths of Yugyeom were lulling him to sleep. It was basically perfection. He doesn’t usually think this, but BamBam really could get used to this.
When Yugyeom starts to shift, BamBam grabs onto his shirt with a whine. “Won’t you stay?” He doesn’t look up from Yugyeom’s chest, not even when the taller one laughs and runs a hand through BamBam’s hair.
“Can’t, I do have a job to get to, you know. But you could come watch or even sit in the pool with me,” Yugyeom offers with a smile that BamBam can’t see.
BamBam groans, finally peeking at Yugyeom’s bright face. “Fine,” he yawns, I’ll sit in the shade. Don’t splash me, yeah? I just got into nice, clean, dry clothes.”
Yugyeom smirks. “Don’t think they’re very clean anymore,” he teases and dodges the hand BamBam flings up to clumsily smack at Yugyeom’s jaw. “But I promise.”
BamBam leisurely unfolds himself off of Yugyeom, stretching a bit and hearing rather than feeling the satisfying pop of his bones. As he sits on the edge of his bed, Yugyeom comes up and wraps his arms around BamBam’s bony shoulders. “I’ll meet you downstairs?” he suggests, and BamBam nods along.
“Yeah, sure. I’ll bring out a glass of lemonade for you.” Yugyeom nods, pressing one more kiss to BamBam’s cheek before locating his pants and swimming trunks, pulling them back up and leaving to go back to the pool. BamBam can’t help but just linger in the bedroom for a moment longer, letting the musky smell of sex stay in his memory before heading downstairs as well.
Yugyeom has already gone out to the pool again, not wasting another minute before shedding his jeans and shirt to start cleaning once more. BamBam watches him for a minute from inside the glass doors, but when Yugyeom beams and waves, BamBam waves back before retrieving a book and two glasses of lemonade and heading outside again.
Though it’s a hot day, the humidity isn’t overwhelming, which BamBam is grateful for. Sitting by the pool is honestly nicer than he expected, and he might have to do it more often, especially with Yugyeom as eye candy. BamBam really likes Yugyeom, probably even more than his other flings. Yugyeom is only a couple months younger, with a gorgeous smile and BamBam’s type of humor. If he didn’t have to go home in two and a half months, BamBam would totally have dated (or at least tried to date) him. Alas, some things just aren’t meant to be.
--
The following week, Yugyeom shows up early, a bit like an overeager puppy. BamBam can’t help but tease him a bit, raising an eyebrow and acting cold. But in the first five minutes of his act, Yugyeom looks so devastated that BamBam coos and cuddles him and lets him stop cleaning early.
He’s growing soft on the boy, and it’s something BamBam rather likes, not that he’d ever admit it out loud. He likes Yugyeom’s loud laugh, his inability to pass by a dog without petting it, and the youngest’s love for the lake that’s just half-an-hour away from BamBam’s vacation home.
BamBam let Yugyeom drag him to the well-secluded spot one humid day, and could feel his heart flutter when Yugyeom beamed at him and dragged him into the lake to find pretty rocks. There were way too many mosquitos for BamBam to be comfortably around, and he doesn’t understand what is about this place that Yugyeom loves, but the smile on Yugyeom’s face and the excitement in his voice was worth it.
And it’s when Yugyeom laughs when BamBam screams at a stray leaf flying into his hair, and how Yugyeom presses a kiss to the bridge of BamBam’s nose, that BamBam thinks he’s in deep.
--
It’s one of the hottest days of the year that Yugyeom pops out of the pool in between where BamBam’s legs have been dangling. “Augh, Gyeom, you’re dripping on my book,” BamBam whines and hastily pulls his paperback away.
Yugyeom pays no mind to BamBam’s plight, instead frowning up at the thinner boy. “Bammie, are we dating?” BamBam hums, using a hand to crush the wet strands of hair out of Yugyeom’s eyes.
“Will I get a discount on the pool cleaning?” Yugyeom whines when BamBam tugs gently on his nose. “We can be whatever you want, Yugyeommie. I’m not used to titles.” He cards his fingers through Yugyeom’s hair as the younger one doesn't say anything for a long minute.
“I want to.”
BamBam smiles, his eyes scrunching as he leans down to press a soft kiss to the top of Yugyeom’s hair, ignoring the smell and taste of the chlorine. “Then we can.”
He pointedly doesn’t mention how he will leave in a month and a half to get back to work, and this pool will be left to grow old once more until he returns in the summer. They’ll cross that bridge when they get to it. Instead, BamBam just puts his book aside (a safe distance from the water) and lets Yugyeom pull his face down to share a kiss.
“Love you,” Yugyeom mumbles against BamBam’s lips, “God, I like you so, so much.”
“Shh,” BamBam soothes, “I know.” His hands travel to Yugyeom’s jaw, gently thumbing over the smooth skin.
It’s when Yugyeom’s hands trail from BamBam’s thighs to his hips and the kiss takes a turn towards passion that BamBam knows he’s in too deep.
--
“I can’t just drop everything and move to the city with you, BamBam,” Yugyeom yells. “I love you, God, I do, but I have a life here.”
“I don’t under-stand,” BamBam argues back just as hotly. “I’m giving you an opportunity. How can you give up my kind of lifestyle just to stay in this town that is basically only a tourist dump?”
As soon as the words leave BamBam’s mouth, he knows he made a mistake. “Is that all I am?” Yugyeom hisses through his teeth. “A charity project?” BamBam doesn’t respond, looking down and away and letting Yugyeom’s anger grow. And as he watches Yugyeom leave in silence, not reaching out, he had hoped things would turn out all right. He didn’t know why the argument had grown.
He was moving back to the city in a week and had asked Yugyeom to come with him. When the younger one declined, BamBam just didn’t understand why. He had offered to pay for any expenses, anything the younger wanted, and voicing those thoughts had started the argument. He knows he isn’t quite humble about his wealth, but he sincerely didn’t mean those previous words about a place Yugyeom is so dearly attached to.
With a sigh, he goes to the kitchen to find a drink. He needs to give Yugyeom time to calm down. He hopes there is a chance he can make things right.
--
It’s the day before he leaves, and Yugyeom shows up at BamBam’s door even if it’s raining and soaking the younger to his bones. BamBam pulls him in, fussing over the weather and how stupid Yugyeom was to talk here in the rain, when Yugyeom pulls him into a searing kiss.
It’s intoxicating, the way Yugyeom bends over easily over the edge of the couch and cries when BamBam bites just right. It’s enchanting, the way Yugyeom looks up at BamBam with tears dotting his eyelashes. But the spell is broken soon after, when Yugyeom grabs onto BamBam’s shirt when the last wave of pleasure rolls over the both of them and his tears fall freely.
The two of them sit in silence for a long spell, neither of them bothering to be decent, the bedsheets pooling around Yugyeom’s waist.
BamBam reaches forwards when he feels like the silence has gotten too unbearable, and grabs Yugyeom’s wrist. “I’m– I’m sorry.” BamBam has never been good at apologies, and this was no exception, going off how Yugyeom’s expression hardens.
“You can’t even pretend you are, huh?” The taller man’s voice is so full of hurt and disdain that BamBam physically and emotionally recoils. Yugyeom just scoffs and yanks his hand back, ignoring BamBam fumbling over words.
Unfortunately, BamBam never learned when to stop, and he just tries again. “Gyeom, you know I didn’t mean it that way.”
The scoff Yugyeom lets out is deafening. “So what did you mean then, BamBam?” BamBam can only stare at Yugyeom. “Did you mean my life was less important than yours or not?”
When BamBam still can’t (or won’t) do much other than just stare at Yugyeom, the younger one scoffs. “Thought so.”
At that, BamBam grabs at Yugyeom, but the taller one dodges him and pulls on his clothes hastily. His hair’s mostly dry, and BamBam scrambles off the bed as well, following the younger into the hallway.
Yugyeom doesn’t seem daunted by the heavy rain, one foot already out the door when BamBam calls out after him, pulling an umbrella out of the closet. “Yugyeom, at least take an umbrella.” BamBam pleads, his voice wavering. He sounds pathetic, he knows, but Yugyeom really was the best thing that happened to him in all the summers he’s lived before. There are a thousand unspoken feelings and words in his words.
Yugyeom glances at him, pausing and finally taking the offered umbrella with a pointed glare at the design on the handle. There’s another deafening pause, and Yugyeom lets out a sigh. “You know, I really liked you too. I’m sorry.” And out the door he goes. And as much as BamBam wants to follow the heart-broken man, he knows there is truth to his summer fling, his short-term boyfriend’s words.
Because BamBam would never have given up his world. Not for a summer of memories.
