Note, this review containst spoilers, sry @Darth_Felflame ! :wimwim:

Background

Darth Maul- Death Sentence is 4 volumes long comic that focuses of adventures of Darth Maul and his brother Savage Opress (lol can name be edgier). The comic is placed in the timeline after Phantom Menace movie where Darth Maul met his end in duel between him and Obi Wan- except that he didn’t die and instead has returned with lower half of his body turned into metal and vengeance in his mind.

I choose to read this comic, cause I wanted to read something about Sith’s and Darth_maul happens to be fellow Zebra as well so what would be better topic to start with. :sakUwu:

Story shortly (MAJOR SPOILERS)

Darth Maul and Savage Opress get attacked by bunch of bounty hunters when they are just drinking their afternoon tea in local cafe. After politely asking the bounty hunters why they attacked and who put bounty on them, Zebras brothers decide to journey planet Lotho Minor to politely ask mine owner Ja Borg to drop the bounty- or drop dead. Unfortunately they got disrupted by bunch of Jedis who after valiant battle from the Sith brothers capture Savage and force Maul to flee.

Wounded Maul is saved by primitive people of the planet, Moorjhone who see him as demon of light- savior from their prophecy. The Moorjhone have problem- sun is deadly laser and trying to scorch them rather soon.

Maul as good guy he is, decides to help Moorjhone to reclaim their homes in the caves and save his brother who has been turned into living art piece by now.

As Maul is leading Moorjhones into the battle, his arc enemy, Obi wan, appears from the sky with army. Darth Maul politely asks Moorjhones to battle Obiwan and his troops mainwhile he goes to retrieve his brother and politely to ask any meddling jedis to get the fuck out of his way.

By now the Moorjhones have realized that Maul might not be the demon-faced savior with the heart of gold like they thought and focus getting into mines to escape the sun with it’s UV radiation. Obiwan and his army realizes they aren’t fan of getting tanned either so they proceed inside while the real demon faced savior with heart of gold sacrifices himself cause why not be a martyr. Darth Maul by now has freed his brother from the art installment and proceeds to deal with the jedis at the scene, ends of being lectured by a child jedi (i guess jedis aren’t against child soldiers) and escapes with his brother while kidnapping Ja Borg to finally ask him to get that god damn bounty from his head.

Review

Darth Maul- Death Sentence is very compact and rather simple story wrapped into 4 volumes. After setting up all the characters and different sides- Darth Maul and his brother, bunch of jedis, greedy mine owner Ja’Boag and natives, it throws them into same planet and makes them fight for each of them to reach their own goals. Darth Maul first killing Ja’Boag who put bounty on his head and then killing Ja’Boag and saving his brother, jedis trying to capture Darth Maul and then figure out what is going on with the mine and natives, natives trying to fight for survival and looking for guidance in their battle and Ja’Boag trying to get rid of the natives while not trying to get exposed to jedis or killed by Darth Maul (it’s so hard to be chaebol owner).

As seen above the story develops the motives in interesting ways so the action and happenings in the story don’t feel too boring. However there is very clear black and white mindset and division between jedi and Darth Maul which mades Darth Maul to seem very well comic book villain. This is bit of pet peeve of mine what comes to writing villains, I don’t like them being evil just sake of being evil, but at least it led into great scene where the natives realized that one of the Jedi’s was the savior in the prophecy- demon in light, not Darth Maul like they first thought.

Another thing that bothered me a bit was the art. I definitely wasn’t fan of it, it’s not worst I have seen in comic books, but I have also seen lot better this was kinda old school art for me (despite not being older than 2012 comic) and I kinda like when characters look more attractive xdd But I did get past the art while reading and it’s not like it’s horrible i’m just picky cause I have read tons of Marvel comics with gorgerous art.

Overall I would give this a 7/10. It’s a entertaining and rather quick story the get through, you can definitely read it in one sitting when u have bit time to focus on it. However it’s not the deepest story out there and the art isn’t eyecandy, so if u are interesting of reading it don’t expect anything mindblowing.

I’ll end with my favorite panel in the story, Darth Maul teaching us some Sith wisdom:

I'm not going to read your review because I intend to check the comic myself after I'm done with Vader's one but the panels look good.

Cool, I avoided the entire recap section and everything literally cause I know part of the story already. Still read the review tho, glad you liked it and honestly that type of art I'd still call eye candy since idk, it just looks nice and I can sense how much work must have been put into it.
