Lets get it--
1. A service animal (dog) Can only be that, a dog. No other animal (In the us) at least, can be a service animal. While an ESA can be any animal.
2. Service dogs go through some type of training and are usually certified after a few months. ESA's are not required to be trained, nor are there any certifications for them.
3. A service dog has special training for specific jobs and functions. While a ESA is just a companion.
4. A service dog is legally protected, as are ESA's (To an extent) Service dogs have full legal protection and are able to travel and enter any premises, while ESA's are only allowed in private housing.
extra:
To qualify for an ESA or service dog.
Service dog: You must have a physical, intellectual, and/or emotional disability.
ESA: You must have a 'prescription' from a certified health official stating you need your animal.
