Doni and Coni get a lot of hate from western stans. They don't deserve it, this is just Western stans not getting how variety shows work.

They "bully" idols on their shows? yeah... they make sure the members all have screentime, including the ones who are shit at variety aka boring af and with that would most likely get edited out! What are they supposed to do in reaction to a shitty joke or an awkward moment? just Not react? Laugh and let it be, even though even the most dimmest of viewers won't find the joke funny? Like really, what ARE they supposed to do, bcs making fun of the situation is literally the only way to make it so that the idol doesn't get edited out!

On top of that, they do it with everybody, but it sticks out the most with idols who are shit at variety (esp rookies who even if they have potential for it are most likely STILL awkward) because those idols aren't able to REACT properly to that teasing. And I am not talking about just the one being teased, I am talking about the whole group joining in with it and lightening the mood a bit.

I've been watching some idol rooms lately esp ones with rookies (The one with txt stood out the most for me with this) and what they are doing is a crash course in variety. You gotta laugh with the MC at the joke (or make a joke about not laughing) and continue on. The jokes Doni and Coni make only stick out badly with rookies most of the time, because they aren't able to respond properly and if they aren't PUT in that situation they never LEARN to react on variety shows.

To sum it up, I don't like all this Doni & Coni hate, bcs literally all they do is let the idols try their hand at variety in a relatively safe environment (aka only ppl who are already their fans will watch it meaning even if they flop... they aren't gonna get shit for it)

Like... The way Doni and Coni tease literally means an idol can have a SHIT ton of screentime while barely saying or even DOING anything!

My bby Woozi is EXACTLY Like that! He barely even opens his mouth during idol Room except to introduce their new song, but he gets screentime! Why? bcs his silence gets made fun of. The way he speaks with few words gets made fun of. And it is not malicious!! it is just making a fun show and giving him screentime!

I agree. The only time they actually kinda pissed me off was with Mamamoo and going on about them being wrong. But, aside from that, they don't do anything "worse" than other variety mcs
And I mean those are isolated incidents and not them actually being malicious. That is them misreading the room or the situation which CAN HAPPEN! They aren't out there to torture idols, they are out there to make a good show even if the idols aren't that funny.

I completely agree. I think that one was because 99% of GGs would play it off and then they'd make a joke and move on. Mamamoo are just stubborn and don't take shit when they're right and I don't think they were prepared for that :haylul:

Personally I think their jokes can go a bit far sometimes that it feels less funny and more just uncomfortable, but rather than them going too far I think it's rather the joke going too far for my personal taste. There's never going to be a joke that makes everyone laugh, and you're never going to avoid upsetting at least one person with your comedy, and that's just the thing about comedy really. If you didn't like the joke, thought it went too far, made you feel uncomfortable, felt that they were just being rude etc, then it's your own responsibility to either just get over it or stop watching. You know what? I absolutely hate BTS' first appearance on weekly idol (minus random dance segment) because BTS are just so awkward and Doni and Coni's jokes just worsens that atmosphere for me because it feels like BTS are just getting the piss taken out of them rather than a friendly laugh together, but I wouldn't blame Doni and Coni for that since they tried their best to make the episode fun even if BTS were a bit awkward at first and the only problem is that I just don't like it, I can solve that by, you guessed it, not watching that particular episode. You know what doesn't solve it? "omg they went too far, this is past the point of a joke, they're being BULLIED :'(, we need to boycott this show, BTS can never appear again!! >>:("

I think it isn't that they are going too far, but it is exactly what I was talking about the idols reacting. That is what decides the atmosphere and well... Idols who aren't good at variety aren't good at keeping that atmosphere up.

BTS were akward on that episode. They weren't good at variety.
most rookie groups (or groups just starting to appear on variety shows) are like that.

because well... they don't know how to respond to make it look and sound not awkward.

Doni and Coni can't exactly tone it down for rookies either bcs well... that would just lead to a REALLY dull and boring episode!

I think people should just realise that Doni and Coni have their own style of comedy and not only is there the rookie thing where they are awkward but they could also be trying to be careful about what they are saying as for a lot of idols now Doni and Coni are their sunbaenims. To add onto that though there's also the fact that not everyone is going to riff well off of Doni and Coni as everyone has their own styles and the styles of Doni and Coni and the artist can clash and end up being awkward.

Mhmm I feel the same, but the number of essays i've seen on Tumblr when BTS were announced to be back on that show is just ridiculous and they all cry about Doni and Coni being bullies and they'd always say like "I really don't want them to go on weekly idol I hope bighit stops putting them on there i'm only watching to support BTS"

And then for their 3rd appearance all the new essays were coming out saying stuff like 'the last episode was okay but i'll never forgive them for the first appearance!" and I just...

This is such a stark difference between the Doni&Coni style idol variety shows and the usual variety shows.

if an idol is awkward on another show, that idol gets shit for it, because a lot of the ppl watching it aren't fans of the idol. if an idol is awkward on idol room or weekly idol, the hosts get shit, because the people watching are fans of the idol.

Honestly, it's not both of them. Specifically the guy without the glasses. He makes me really upset.

He's constantly hitting idols, ie. Jeongyeon, when they're visibly uncomfortable. His jokes go really far.

And the point you made about giving people screentime? They don't chose that. They're just the hosts, not the producers.

You do know that thing was stopped literally years ago by this point, so saying they are constantly doing that is kinda exaggerating! Also do you have a problem with that on Knowing Brother?

not to mention... if we are going with the producers argument, wasn't it the producers who decided that the punishment for failing a segment was the toy hammer? And on top of THAT, Coni was the one doing the hitting BUT that was bcs Coni's role is to be the support for Doni who is the main MC aka... he does the manual stuff.

It's not like he is turning up and going oh wouldn't it be fun to hit some female idols today! That is not what is happening!

They don't choose it, but anybody can guess that if what smbdy is doing is boring it is gonna get edited out.

A couple of things:

1.It wasn't stopped years ago at all. He literally hit Jeongyeon on Idol Room. And I'm not talking about the pink hammer. I mean actually hitting them with their bare hands when they are obviously uncomfortable with it. Her facial expression was VERY obvious that she was uncomfortable, and she even moved away.

On Knowing Bros, that's a punishment, and that is part of the show. Randomly hitting your guest as a joke is not funny and not okay. The toy hammer doesn't even hurt, either.

Also I watched that clip... to me it looks like she was startled. Kinda like anybody would be if pushed suddenly. I... I genuinely don't see that clip as something to be mad about. Not even kidding.

I looked at it... Doesn't look serious to me at all. When you said hit that made me really confused at first, but now that I looked at it... IT ISN'T EVEN A HIT! It is a slight push!

It's not like a blow, but yeah. Not okay to me.

Probably better to agree to disagree on this one too.

Usually its bg stans too. Funny enough D & C are most likely going to be the only time i watch many idols on any show.

AoA, Girls Day, EXID, 17 , Astro , Golden Child, KNK, Berry good, Rainbow, 4 minute, Loona are just a few i have seen only because of the shows. Some are groups who's music i do not like and normally i would pay zero attention to them.

Groups like OMG, Lovelyz, MMM, WJSN i researched just because of WI with Lovelyz making it into the bias list.

Some rookies are a bunch of fun see the gfriend/Berry Good(BG got overshadowed gfriend we so good but d anc c tried) ep, IZ*ONE, April did well.

Some of the best eps are when Doni is merciless on one of the kids. Like say Gyuri(kara), Irene, Baby soul (Heechul took that to new levels), Hyuna
Krystal and others flip that and they have no mercy back.

Now i do like IR less at times or im not on board with the idol 999 thing.

WI is better now the KSY set of hosts just did not work.

Thank you for bringing this up. Not just for Doni and Coni, I have seen it for other variety shows too, especially with BTS. There was a radio show where armys where consistently commenting that the hosts were taking the joke too far when it didn't seem that way at all. I can understand because they're not accustomed to Korean humor but it wouldn't hurt to try and understand where the hosts are coming from. The hosts found a funny moment, seized it and prolonged it for as long as possible in way that wasn't too hurtful to the members and still made viewers laugh.

I love Doni and Coni. They do focus on certain members too much sometimes but they're doing their job exceedingly well and that is giving lots of idols a chance. They're doing their very best for non fans to take an interest in the group as well and provide opportunities for them. They haven't remained so long and so famous in the industry for nothing. Being mean is part of Coni's persona, but he's also quite kind-hearted towards idols and he adores quite a few on the show and it shows. Thank you Coni and Doni, they don't deserve most of the hate they get.
