From the ashes I rose, blinking away what felt like sleep
Observing my surroundings I froze
The normal massive horses stomping were replaced by even larger creatures, blares and groans made my adjusting eyes close
Feathers quivering I knew the comfort of what the preceding one felt would be what they’d miss most
They were a ghost
With my heart aching and the memories of the one before me flashing in a blur in my mind, I suddenly felt calm at the familiar smell of smoke
Peering behind me, I heard a raspy cough that came from... What did the one before me call them? Humans
Somehow I instinctively knew that humans were dangerous, but this one was with smoke! I blinked in confusion
Spreading my stiff, vibrant red and orange wings I flew in a whisper into the smokey pollution
There the human sat, feeble and wrinkled, he replaced the bounded item that put off the smoke with a newer substitution
The human didn’t seem to take much notice of me, in fact he seemed pleased
Perhaps relieved?
The wrinkled human made a gruff noise and gestured to something in a silver container... Seed?
A sudden hunger took over me and with an excited quiver I perched somewhat unsteadily on a wooden stick, devouring the meal until the ache of hunger began to recede
A large grasp on my wings, gentle but startling made me wriggle until I was able to take flight
The human! I flew to a higher branch where the short armed man could never reach, I scowled at him. But to my surprise he held his hands out, begging and his old face white.
I hesitated. Cautiously I swooped to a lower branch just above the old man, preparing to once again take flight.
He reached out one shaky hand and pressed it against my beak, tensing I prepared to bite
Then the memories of the one before me blinded my sight
A young man gifting his daughter with a bag full of ashes
Thousands of years quickly flash in a fit of rainbow batches
They only slowed to take me back to the ashes
The simple times with a human, a nice human male or female, laughing, holding... me? No the ones before me. The memories spun in even faster flashes
Finally, they began to slow. There was the old man, younger, youthful young eyes full of compassion
Years passed, wrinkles becoming more and more visible. There was the one before me, old as well, curling up in the corner of the room where I arose
Then the one before gave a slight shiver before combusting into flames and falling into a pile like snow.
Blinking the memories away, I met the eyes of the old man who looked so familiar to me now and with a heavy heart I leaned into his shaky hands wishing the years ahead could come to a stop, or possibly just pass by slow.
