Historic day here in Japan today as Emperor Akihito becomes the first emperor in over 200 years to abdicate from the throne. With this the Heisei Era which started on the 7th January 1989 when the Showa Era ended with Empror Akihito ascending to the throne as the 125th Emperor of Japan.

The Heisei Era saw a lot of changes throughout Japan. From prosperous growth in both the technological and medicine fields. To the growth of popular pop cultures such as Pokemon, Playstation, Nintendo and Anime that has spread throughout the world. However even with all of this the Heisei Era will be looked back on with mixed emotions as the Heisei Era also had its share of negative moments. From the ongoing issues with a rapidly declining population. To devastating natural disasters such as the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 and the Tohoku Earthquake & Tsunami of 2011.
