Mafia/Soulmate AU. Too much action and not enough detail, but passable.
It was supposed to be a typical raid. Break in, kill the guy, take his drugs and leave. Hua Cheng didn't count on one of his men running up to him, panting. "There's a boy in the basement."
A boy in the basement. Normally Hua Cheng wouldn't have cared about something as inconsequential as a drug lord's pet, but he was feeling rather charitable that night due to the success of the raid. "Let's see."
It took mere moments for Hua Cheng to reach the basement door, his long legs carrying him much farther and faster than the stout hitman at his side. Pressing his ear against the door, he could hear soft cries. Hua Cheng aimed a well-placed kick near the lock, and the door swung open. Descending the steps to the basement, Hua Cheng saw him. Sitting on a mattress in the corner of the freezing room, shivering slightly with his hands covering his ears. Tears were dripping out of his bright eyes, eyes that were looking up hoplessly into Hua Cheng's own. With slow, purposeful steps, he walked across the room, squatting by the boy's side. "What am I supposed to do with you, hm?"
Hua Cheng's toneless words garnered a response he wasn't expecting. The boy's eyes lit up, his thin lips curling upwards into a smile. He slowly took a hand off his ear and reached out to grab Hua Cheng's own. Hua Cheng pulled away, not bothering to hide the disgust on his face. He didn't get
touched. No one touched him.
But the boy was undeterred. The tiny smile still on his face, he sat up straighter. "I'm Xie Lian."
It was like someone had doused Hua Cheng in a bucket of icy water. He ripped his sleeve back as if it had burned him, staring hard at the words on his forearm.
I'm Xie Lian. Written in neat, even print.
Xie Lian lifted up the ratty sleeve of the ugly sweatshirt he was wearing, showing the unintelligible mess on his arm. Hua Cheng couldn't tell what it said, but it was definitely his handwriting. For a moment Hua Cheng wondered how Xie Lian knew it was him. He guessed that looking at it for years would have been enough time for him to make it out.
He didn't pull away this time when Xie Lian grabbed his hand. He was still frozen in shock. So much was going through his mind that he couldn't separate each thought. All he could think was his
soulmate was finally with him and that he could
finally give his all to the one person
made to understand him.
He curled his fingers around Xie Lian's, biting back a smile at how tiny and thin his fingers were. He already adored everything about this boy, and he barely even knew him.
Slowly, he reached out to gently pry Xie Lian's other hand off his ear. "Did the gunshots scare you?"
Xie Lian nodded, making Hua Cheng frown. "I'm sorry. But the man who...did this to you is dead now."
"He's dead? So I can leave?"
"Of course you can leave. You'll be by my side now."

"So you're telling me, that my shipment is
delayed because of you
incompetent pieces of shit?" Hua Cheng's voice was rising. He was getting angrier with each second that passed. "I told you already that I have a guy waiting for this shit! Do you have any idea how much money you've all cost me?"
Xie Lian, who was perched on his lap, stiffened slightly. He gently brushed Hua Cheng's bangs back, his fingers cool and comforting. But Hua Cheng was not to be calmed in a moment like this.
He pushed Xie Lian's face into his chest, covering up his ear with one hand, the other reaching for his gun. The gunshots resonated around the room, making Xie Lian cringe. Hua Cheng petted his lover's hair, staring at the bodies of the three men who had ruined his morning. "This is why the only person I trust is you." Hua Cheng sighed, dropping his gun on his desk and rubbing his temple. "Now I have to get the office cleaned again. Shall we spend the rest of the day in the library?"
Xie Lian nodded, a smile slowly appearing on his face. "That sounds lovely."
