Chapter 1

Becca’s POV

“Bella, Goldie!” I called upstairs to my golden retriever puppies. “Do y’all want to go for a ride?”

Both dogs came running down the stairs and sat at my feet.

“Good girls!” I praised as I connected the double leash to their collars. I approached the door, but before I opened it, I told them to wait; only Goldie obeyed her command.

“Ah-ah – Bella, wait,” I scolded sternly. I then gave the sit-stay command, which she obeyed, and finally opened the door and told them to heel.

It took me about two minutes of repeating commands to get them into the car, but we were finally on the road before I knew it.

We were almost back home after going to the beach when my friend Olivia called me. I answered on Bluetooth.

“What’s up, Liv?” I asked.

“This is Olivia’s mother,” the solemn female voice said. “She was just in a wreck on her way to work this morning, and they just took her to the hospital.”

I was so shocked that I almost wrecked my car as well. “What?! What happened?”

“She was hit by a drunk driver. You might want to hurry on over here; the medics don’t think she’ll make it much longer.”

“I…” was all I could manage before my throat dried up in devastation.

“Becca?” Mrs. Frazier addressed me after a minute’s pause. “Are you there?”

“I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

Back at home, I dropped the dogs off before heading to the hospital to see Olivia.

“Hi, I’m here to see Olivia Frazier,” I told the receptionist when I got there.

“Yes, she’s in room 208 in the ICU,” she said. “Are you related to Olivia?”

“Not by blood; I’m her best friend. Thank you.”

I took the elevator to the second floor, and when I got to Olivia’s room, she was lying motionless in bed, hooked up to several machines. There was a constant beeping as the heart monitor tracked her heartbeat.

“Olivia…” I said as I ran my hand down her ice-cold arm. “Liv, say something.”

“She can’t say anything, Bex; she’s unconscious,” Mrs. Frazier chimed in. She had been sitting in one of the chairs across from Olivia’s bed. “Her heartbeat has been slowing down gradually since she was admitted an hour ago, so only time will tell when our Lord takes her home.”

Suddenly, the heart monitor indicated a rapid decline of Olivia’s heartbeat. I squeezed her hand as she slowly faded away and didn’t let go until she finally flatlined.

“She can’t be gone!” I said as I cried on Mrs. Frazier’s shoulder. “She had two-month-old twins to raise! Who’s going to take care of them now?”

“I know, hon; I know. I’ll have them for the time being until they find someone.”

I sniffled, and Mrs. Frazier gave me a tissue to blow my nose on. “Okay.”

“So, let me get this straight,” I said to Olivia’s lawyer two weeks later. “She wants me, of all the people she knew, to raise her twins?”

“Yes, it’s in her will,” he said, interlocking his fingers and smiling. “Shall I read you that part of the document again?”

I shook my head in disbelief. “No, that’s not necessary. But I don’t even have a partner; how am I supposed to handle two babies at once, singlehandedly? And with a dog, to boot?”

Mr. Crawford leaned forward. “Miss Pruitt, she specifically wrote in that you would be her children’s guardian should she ever pass away; it’s either this or foster care. Do you want that to happen, considering the possibility of the twins being separated?”

He did have a point there, so I finally agreed, and we spent the next hour signing adoption papers and everything.
