Look, I´m really bad at finishing stuff, so I assume it will have as many chapters as I feel like writing. I refuse to make any promises :). But I can promise you that this is gonna be both fluffy and angsty. I hope you´ll like it!
Also I desperately want to make it into a crossover but let´s not get too ambitious :D.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The University of Toronto was eager to accept about 20 exceptional Chinese students of various majors. The uni could tick "popular for international students" box and get extra money from the government and the happy students got to get a proper taste of the western life. Everyone was probably more or less ready to board the plane. The chitchatting, the kisses from parents, the hands waving off worries. Mothers reminding their sons and daughters of socks and clean underwear.... typical. It´s okay if you die, but just don´t you wear unclean underwear or I will bring you to life, smack you and then kill you with my own hands. Such a disgrace to our family!
Unfortunately this group seemed a bit ... lonely. Xue Yang was standing there with his baggage, one cheap suitcase that he prayed would not get broken (because he REALLY wanted to say that it was because he had too many things to take, but honestly he didn´t, he just knew what a cheap product was in his hands. Yang was quite small for a man, but athletic and good looking. His cheeky look has made a couple of girls blush, however, he didn´t fit into he standard of the boy that a girl (or a boy for that matter) would bring home. He was poor, an orphan, a rogue and really bad at expressing his feelings. His black rocker-jacket, black skinny jeans (a bit washed off so they almost looked grey at that point) and old Nike shoes just gave him this ideal "bad boy college student" vibe. He was in the last year of his university studies and he was struggling. He had always wanted to study sports management, but now he wasn´t sure whether it was a good enough idea. Literally the question of "what will I do with that degree" came to haunt him like demons.
Another traveller with a sulky long face, a bit ripped jeans (but in a proper ways; it kind of made him seem like wanted to rebel, but just ..gently) was a secon-year diplomacy student - Lan Zhan. He was accompanied by his uncle (the onlookers would easily mistake him for his father) and his "ge", older brother. The little group seemed stoic, though the brother kept smiling and probably tried to give the younger one some last minute advices. The uncle seemed strict and tried to tell a couple of "dad jokes" that his nephews laughed off with polite laughs.
The third group was a bit more chirpy. The two boys, second year students and long time friends of Lan Zhan (who he refused acknowledge in public though his eyes just constantly kept looking at the tall dark-haired guy with big eyes and constant smile on his face). Lan Zhan kept staring at that direction so much that Xue Yang was not sure whether he was just imagining things or the two of them were constantly flirting. The family of two sons, one of them obviously being favoured by mother and the other by father - they seemed all happy to say all their goodbyes. Though one of them seemed a bit distant, relations icy on the mother-son part, Xue Yang could not help but envy them a little. One of them confident, full of life and energy, the other a bit more serious, but still obviously exciting. Ideal. He could only imagine how proud their parents must be.
The third couple was that of a sister and brother. The proud student of medicine and her little brother. The girl was ambitious, the brother was worried. "What will I do in Canada while you study, sister?" he asked with almost a child-like expression. "You will work! You can always find work." She smiled and touched his hand gently. Fierce but there was so much love in her, Yang smiled. He had never longed for a sister until now. Hardly had he known she would be his roommate and her brother would become his best friend.
The third couple was of two boys his age. He knew because he had seen one of them on the campus. He was definitely doing something connected to business or Maths. Actually, Song Lan was Mathematical Analytics student and his companion, Xie Xingchen was a nurse student. They were both incredibly calm, but not in an unpleasant way, more in a ... "I meditate 3 hours a day and eat only veggies" kind of style. Normally, Yang would have turned his head away long time ago. They were both dressed in relatively uninteresting way, the taller one in darker clothes, the other one cute as a kitten. But his eyes were glued on the little kitten and it seemed he was not ready to let him be.
Anyway, as life has it, he wouldn´t even have to. Despite different majors, it was easier to put them all in the same dorm and as soon as they would all land they would find themselves near each other along with four other weirdos - Wen KeXing, Zhou Zishu, Cao Wei Ning and Gu Xiang.
But right now Xue Yang had another problem to face and that was the uneasy feeling of growing interesting in the little angelic nurse that was seated in the middle seat between him and that cold guy Song. Xue Yang greeted the one he knew (because as he wanted to unknow him apparently Lan Song had a great memory and remembered the other one), he was repaid for his patience with being introduced to the newest apple of his eye. The little gentle one was introduced himself as Xiao Xingchen or simply "Chen" as he added with a smile.
"Pleasure to meet you" Yang smiled at his nervousness and squeezed his rather delicate fingers. He was almost afraid he would break them like chopsticks.
"Uni of Toronto?" asked Xingchen cheerfully.
Xue Yang despite any growing fascination that he was trying to ignore was used to walk this path of life alone and had no interested in giving in to his feelings and getting to have .. "gasp" ... friends or anything else.
"Hmm" he tried his best to make himself sound as irritated as possible but the other guy just refused his negativity and smiled encouranginly.
"What is your major?"
"Sports Management" keep it short, just keep it short, he´ll soon give up.
"Oh, interesting! Which sports do you play?"
"Uhm, football, basketball, but mainly football." He confessed his love and noticed that Song was listening too.
"What are you studying?" He finally made himself polite instead of being introverted barbarian but he has to survive somehow.
"Nursing" That made Yang almost choke while drinking Fanta.
"Nursing like nursing? Isn´t that for women?" political corectness was not a thing for Yang at all.
"Well, perhaps" Xingchen smiled "but I do feel that it is where my heart is. I like helping people and I simply did not feel that being a doctor would suit me. Plus I really didn´t do that well on my tests" He giggled. No, he actually giggled when he said that. Yang always got an immense wave of self-hate when he failed, he hated to lose, he hated to be the last and here was this gentle-looking boy who laughed at his own failings.
"You like working ... in the hospital?" Yang asked as if liking that place would be the most absurd thing ever.
"I like working with babies, yes. I am planning to get an internship in neonatology department". He turned to Song who confirmed with a proud smile.
"Well." said Yang and let that thought sink in.
It was after all interesting.
For the whole journey Song said nothing, only watched how the love of his life was slowly falling in love with someone else. Lan was never a good conversationalist and he would rather find the latest manga and read, but nothing, nothing in this world could go passed him and he knew that at this moment, he had step up his game.
Him and Xingchen had never kissed, never held hands and yet they were inseparable. At least they were inseparable in Song´s head but did Xingchen actually know this?
Song turned the page and let the two men chat until they all fell asleep and found themselves in Canada, woken up by someone bursting a balloon at their ears.
"CANADAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" Wuxian screamed and made the whole airplane dance to his imaginary song.
