Chapter 1

“Here you are, sir,” Molly Wilkins said to her customer at the bakery, handing him his food. The previous day, he’d requested a lemon cake to give his wife for her birthday.

The man took one look at the cake and said, “Oh, yeah – my wife will love this! Thank you and have a wonderful morning.”

Molly smiled. “You, too.”

As the man walked out, Molly’s boss, Alice, came out to talk to her. “Molly, a word?” she asked, gesturing for Molly to join her in the back.

“What’s up?” she asked her boss, leaning against one of the metal counters with a grip on the edge.

“So, we have a new hire coming in the morning, and since you’re my best employee, I want to assign you as her trainer.”

Molly stood up straight as soon as the words came out. Molly was a social butterfly, so if there was one thing she loved about this job, it was the opportunity to make new friends.

“Oh, sure!” Molly said enthusiastically. “What’s her name?”

“Her name is Young-Mi Kwon; she emigrated from South Korea six months ago. Do you think you’ll be up for the task?”

“Certainly; I can’t wait to start.” Molly rubbed her palms together in anticipation for her new task.

Outside the front of the shop, Kwon Young-Mi eased her silver Hyundai into park in the spot directly in front of the entrance. The song she’d been listening to was nearing its last chorus, so Young-Mi let it finish before she got out.

Young-Mi stepped out with her purse, locked the door with her key fob, and quickly glanced at her watch. It was 10:12 in the morning, about fifteen minutes before the start of her shift here at Millie’s Bakery. She was very relieved at this, as she’d gotten turned around three times trying to find the right place.

When she walked into the shop, Young-Mi was immediately met with the aroma of freshly baked cake and the clanging sound of metal in the distance. She initially didn’t see anybody behind the counter, but five seconds later, an older woman came into view from the back.

“Oh, hello!” the woman greeted her. “Are you our new hire, Young-Mi Kwon?”

“Yes, I’m Kwon Young-Mi,” she replied with a quick bow. “I hope I’m not too early.”

“Oh, no problem; the earlier, the better! I’m Alice, the head manager here. Come with me and I’ll introduce you to your trainer.”

Young-Mi followed Alice into the back of the shop, where a girl about her age was busy frosting cupcakes.

When she sensed somebody coming up behind her, Molly stopped what she was doing to see who it was. It was Alice, and she had a girl in tow whom she assumed was Young-Mi. She was thin and petite, and her jet-black hair had been done up in long, braided pigtails.

“Young-Mi, this is Molly,” Alice introduced. “She’s going to be showing you the ropes today. Molly, meet Young-Mi.”

“Hi, nice to meet you,” Molly greeted, shaking Young-Mi’s hand. In return, Young-Mi bowed before her new coworker. “Welcome to the team!”

“Thank you,” Young-Mi said with a shy smile.

Molly spent a good chunk of her shift with Young-Mi by her side as she taught her how things worked at Millie’s, and by clock-out time at two, they’d become close enough to be friends.

“So, I’m about to head out now,” Molly told the trainee, “but it was very nice working with you.”

“You, too,” Young-Mi returned. “Want my number to chat?”

“Absolutely; I was thinking the same thing.”

Upon jotting down Young-Mi’s number on a spare napkin, folding it, and putting it in her purse, Molly said goodbye to Alice and her other coworkers and left the building. Before she went home, she stopped by her parents’ house to pick up her ten-month-old daughter Emma.

“Molly, you’re just in time,” Mrs. Wilkins said after she answered the door. “Emma’s trying to walk!”

Molly stepped inside to see Mr. Wilkins sitting on the floor with his legs spread apart, while Emma was attempting to take her first steps.

“Come to Grampy, Emmers!” he coaxed, clapping his hands in encouragement. “Come here!”

Emma pulled herself up from her sitting position and tried to move her right leg forward, but she stumbled and fell back down. This made her start crying in frustration.

“Aw, you’re okay!” Molly said, picking Emma up to comfort her. Then, she put her back down and urged her to try again. “Come to Mommy; you can do it!”

Mrs. Wilkins came up behind Emma and took her hands as she made her second attempt. When Mrs. Wilkins let go, Emma slowly placed her left leg in front, then her right. She made it all the way to where Molly was sitting, before stumbling again.

“Good job, Em; you did it!” Molly cheered.

Molly and her parents went back and forth, taking turns to be Emma’s target, for the next fifteen minutes before Molly decided she ought to get home.

Molly and Emma made it home just in time for the bus to drop off Emma’s kindergartener brother Gavin. Molly watched as the door opened, and out popped Gavin and the neighbor kids, one of them being his best friend Brycen.

“Hi, Ms. Wilkins,” Brycen said flirtatiously when he saw Molly. This was a daily occurrence, as Brycen had a big crush on her.

“Brycen, I’m old enough to be your mother,” Molly scolded. “Nice try, kiddo.”

“Aw, man!” Brycen swung his fist in the air to show his frustration before trotting off to his own home.

Once the three of them were inside, Molly dished out snacks for both kids and decided to plop down on the couch and give Young-Mi a ring. After five or six rings, the call went to voicemail, so she left a message.

“Hey, this is Molly from work. Give me a call back on this number; let’s chat!”

It was only then that Molly realized, through making sure the number she’d called was the same as the one on paper, she’d accidentally misdialed, transposing the last two digits. Who had she called, then?

Chapter 2

After an extremely busy afternoon, the seven boys in BTS retreated to their Hollywood mansion for the night. The mansion was certainly big enough to house seven grown men, as it was four stories tall and contained more than twenty rooms in total.

After a brief discussion of tomorrow’s plans, the boys dispersed to do their own things. Kim Tae-Hyung’s “thing” was to lie down and take a nap, but not before checking his phone for messages. The voicemails he gets are usually business-related, and all were no exception, save the very last one. The message struck him so weirdly that he had to play it three times to process it.

“Hey, this is Molly from work,” the young female voice was saying. “Give me a call back on this number; let’s chat!”

“Molly…?” Tae-Hyung whispered in great confusion. Of all the people he knew, not one of them was named Molly. He played the message one last time before finally deciding to take a chance and call her back.

***

“…and they lived happily ever after; the end,” Molly read out loud to Gavin. He was in bed now, and Molly had just read him the story of Cinderella. “Okay, bud; time to go night-night.”

“But I’m not sleepy,” Gavin whined. He was obviously lying, as his voice had a groggy rasp to it.

“Gavin, it’s 45 minutes past your bedtime and you’re showing very obvious signs of needing your shuteye.” Molly tucked him in. “Get into a comfy position and close your eyes,” she stage-whispered, kissing Gavin on the cheek before she crept out of his bedroom.

Molly had barely made it back downstairs when she heard her phone ringing. She rushed to pick it up and answered with a breathy, “Hello?”

“Uh… hello,” the obviously male voice said on the other line. “You call this number early?”

Molly was initially confused, but then she remembered she’d accidentally called a wrong number this afternoon when trying to ring Young-Mi.

“Oh!” Molly interjected, turning red with embarrassment. “I did get the wrong number; I’m sorry. I meant to call somebody else, but I accidentally switched two of the digits. Who did I end up calling, anyway?”

“Um… Kim Tae-Hyung.”

Molly laughed nervously. “Yeah, I was trying to reach a girl named Kwon Young-Mi. I guess I’ll let you go; sorry again about the call.”

“No worry; I liked hearing your accent, very cute. Where are you from?”

“Thank you so much! I’m from Morrisville, North Carolina. It’s near Raleigh, which is North Carolina’s capital. I find your voice pretty handsome, too. Have a good night!”

“Bye-bye.”

Not even five seconds after she hung up, Molly realized that she just may have been talking to her favorite K-pop idol. BTS was her favorite group, and she favored Tae-Hyung the most out of the seven members. Before she could think about it, Molly redialed Tae-Hyung’s number; he answered with the traditional Korean greeting.

“Hey, it’s Molly again,” she said. “Do you happen to know BTS, by any chance?”

Tae-Hyung laughed. “I wonder when you would catch on! In fact, I am in BTS.”

Molly stifled a scream by holding her free hand on her mouth. “Oh, my God, you’re kidding! I can’t believe my friend’s number is THAT CLOSE to Kim Tae-Hyung’s! If she loves BTS as much as I do, she will DIE when I tell her.”

“Well, congratulations!” Tae-Hyung changed the subject. “While I have you on the phone, do you want to meet somewhere for lunch this weekend? I would love to know your face if it’s as cute as your voice.”

Molly giggled in awe. “That’s for you to find out, I guess. So, my son has soccer practice Saturday afternoon, but we can do Saturday night. I’ll just have to call a sitter to watch the kids.”

“Oh, you have children?” Tae-Hyung asked.

“Yep! Gavin is my soccer-playing son who’s five, and my daughter Emma is ten months.”

“I bet they’re cute.”

“They are! So, how about we meet at Massimo’s Pizza for our date? I’m thinking around six or seven.”

“Seven sounds cool,” Tae-Hyung agreed. “I’ll be looking forward to meeting you!”

“You, too.”

***

The next day at work, Molly told Young-Mi about accidentally dialing Tae-Hyung.

Young-Mi’s eyes widened with every word coming out of Molly’s mouth. “You got hold of BTS V?!” she exclaimed. “You are kidding!”

Molly laughed. “That’s what I said to him. Do you like BTS?”

“Yes, they’re my favorite group! My bias is Jung-Kook.”

“Cool! And the best part is, he even asked me out!”

Young-Mi laughed in disbelief. “No, he didn’t! You know idols can’t date without possibly being exposed!”

“No, really! He asked me out, and we’re meeting at Massimo’s Pizza on Saturday night.”

“Oh, wow! You are one lucky bitch, Molly.”

Now it was Molly’s turn to laugh. “Thank you.”

Chapter 3

As it turned out, the sitter Molly usually uses, Brenda Brown, had a prior commitment and couldn’t watch the kids Saturday night, so Molly enlisted Young-Mi to do it. She may not have known her for very long, but Young-Mi had convinced her that she was very good with kids.

The doorbell rang at 6:30, just as Molly was feeding Gavin and Emma their dinner. Tonight’s meal consisted of veggie lasagna, garlic bread, and cooked carrots, one of Gavin’s favorites.

“Hey, come in!” Molly greeted, letting Young-Mi step inside. “Did you have any trouble finding the place?”

“A little bit,” Young-Mi admitted. “Is this a bad time?”

“No, no; this is perfect! Let me introduce you to the kids really quick.”

Young-Mi followed Molly into the kitchen, where Gavin and Emma were diligently eating their food. Gavin looked up from his plate when he saw his mother, but then frowned when he saw the young Asian girl instead of Brenda.

“You’re not Brenda!” Gavin scowled. “Go away!”

“Brenda had some business to take care of tonight,” Molly told him. “This is your new sitter, Young-Mi Kwon.”

Gavin scowled even harder. “What the fuck kind of name is that?!”

“Gavin Dailey!” Molly scolded. “Go sit in time-out for five minutes; that was very disrespectful of you.”

“But my dinner!” Gavin whined.

“I’ll put it in the fridge, and Young-Mi can give it to you when you decide to be nice to her. Five minutes; go!” Gavin sighed and sulked off to the corner Molly was pointing towards. Then, Molly rolled her eyes and said, “Boys, right?”

Young-Mi laughed. “I have a nephew his age, so I can totally relate. So, he’s five?”

“Yeah, and his little sister Emma over here is ten months.”

They approached Emma in her highchair, and Emma reached out and grabbed Young-Mi’s hair. She winced with the slight discomfort and pulled it back.

“Ouch, that hurt!” she scolded. “Hi, Emma! I’m Young-Mi.”

Emma giggled and grabbed at Young-Mi’s hair again, but Young-Mi resisted.

“Yeah, she likes long hair,” Molly explained. “So, Emma usually goes to bed right after dinner, but Gavin will be allowed to stay up until nine on weekends.”

Young-Mi nodded. “Okay. Does she have a routine?”

“They both do. Emma gets sung to before bed – I have a specific song I sing to her. And then Gavin is read to; he likes me to read stories like ‘Peter Pan’ or ‘Alice in Wonderland’, and if he resists going to sleep afterwards, don’t let him stay up longer, because then he’ll be crabby in the morning.”

“What song does Emma like to hear?”

“Do you know a song called ‘Mama Wrote You a Lullaby’ by Jessie James Decker?”

Young-Mi instantly knew what song Molly was talking about, as she was a big country music fan and had Jessie James Decker as a favorite.

“Yeah, I know it by heart! I love her music.”

“Oh, good!”

“Mom, is it time yet?” Gavin asked.

Molly looked at her watch and discovered that it was now 6:35. “Are you going to be sweet to your babysitter?”

“Yeah.”

“And no swearing; if I hear about you being a potty-mouth, you’re going to bed early tomorrow night!”

“Okay.”

“Do you think you’ve got it, Young-Mi?” Molly asked.

She nodded. “I can take it from here. Have a good time on your date!”

“Thank you.” Molly kissed Gavin and Emma goodbye, put on her jacket, grabbed her purse, and left for the pizza place.

At Massimo’s, Tae-Hyung stepped out of his car with a grin on his face and butterflies in his stomach. This was his first date in a long time, so he was feeling a little nervous about the outcome. Would she like him? Would he be able to make a good first impression? Nonetheless, he was excited to be ending his relationship dry spell.

When he approached the counter, a hostess was very quick in spotting him and asked if she could help.

“I have a reservation for Kim at seven,” Tae-Hyung informed her. “I am on a, ah… what you call it? Ah, when you don’t know who you are seeing? Does that make sense?”

Tae-Hyung was getting more and more flustered with every word, but the hostess understood right away that he was thinking of a blind date. This was the third blind date she’d waited on this month.

“A blind date?” the hostess finished, looking through the reservations to find his.

“Yes, thank you! A blind date.” Tae-Hyung let out a nervous chuckle. “Sorry, English is not my first language.”

“No, you’re fine! Right this way, sir,” she said, turning on her heel to lead him to a nearby booth. She placed one menu in front of him and the other across from him. “Somebody will be with you in just a moment. What does your date look like, so we can look out for her?”

“She said she’ll be wearing a dark red turtleneck and blue jeans; her name is Molly.”

“Thank you; as soon as this Molly gets here, we’ll bring her over. Enjoy your date!”

“Thank you.”

During his wait, Tae-Hyung occupied himself by scrolling through Twitter to see what fans were saying about BTS. He was pleased to see all the love for their latest collaboration, “Butter” featuring Megan the Stallion. Nam-Joon had been wowed by her rap skills, so they’d picked her to do a hook for “Butter”. After they recorded it, she’d praised them for how kind and talented they were. He was about to tweet through BTS’ account when he got a text from Ji-Min.

“How’s the date going?” the text read in Korean hangul. “Did you meet her yet?”

“Not yet,” Tae-Hyung replied. “I just got here five minutes ago.”

“Ah, okay. Let me know when you do!”

“I will; thanks for the text, Ji-Min hyung. I appreciate it.”

“Sure thing, V.”

Chapter 4

“Hi, I’m here for a blind date,” Molly told the hostess who came to help. “Did a guy named Kim come in earlier?”

“Kim?” she repeated. Molly confirmed, and the hostess glanced at the reservation book to find Tae-Hyung’s reservation. “Ah, here it is, he’s at table 7. Follow me!”

With butterflies in her stomach, Molly followed the older woman to the booth where Tae-Hyung was sitting. He was busy texting, so even after the hostess left them alone, she waited. When he was done, he looked up and immediately froze.

Standing directly in front of Tae-Hyung was probably the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. She was petite and voluptuous, with an hourglass figure and more curves than a winding backroad. Her blonde hair lay in waves gently on her shoulders, and he could see caramel-brown eyes looking at him.

“Well, hello,” he said flirtatiously, clutching his heart with his right hand to keep it from beating out of his chest. “I’m Tae-Hyung. Are you Molly?”

“I know, you’re my favorite BTS member,” Molly said as she sat down. “I hope I’m not too late.”

“No, you’re okay; I only ordered drinks, if that’s alright with you. I got us some Italian sodas.”

“Yeah, that’s great! I love Italian soda.”

A waiter came up with their sodas, and Molly took a sip of hers and let out a satisfied sigh.

“Are you guys ready to order, or do you need a minute?” the waiter asked.

“We’ll share an extra-large pizza with the works,” Tae-Hyung answered before Molly had a chance to say otherwise.

“Tae-Hyung!” Molly protested.

“An extra-large pizza with the works, and it’s on me,” Tae-Hyung repeated to Molly, giving her a glare that said he meant it.

“I can’t eat sausage; they make it spicy, and my eyes will water like crazy!” Molly argued.

“Hold the sausage, then?” the waiter asked. “We can do that. We’ll have your pizza right out for you.”

Molly finally decided to give in. “Yes, hold the sausage. Thank you!”

“Not a problem at all.”

“Sorry I, ah… how do you say it?”

“Jumped the gun?” Molly asked; he nodded. “It’s okay; just ask me next time.”

“So, tell me about your children. You said Gavin is ten months?”

“No, that’s his sister Emma. Gavin is in kindergarten, turning six in July.”

“Ah! What are they like?”

“Gavin can be really sweet, but then he’s also the ultimate definition of the word ‘boy’ – loud, crazy, and at times troublesome. I actually had to put him in time-out tonight for sassing the sitter.”

Tae-Hyung laughed. “That sounds like a boy, alright! What did he say to the sitter?”

“He mocked her name. He’s lucky she wasn’t offended by it. But Emma is just adorable. Of course, at ten months she doesn’t have much of a personality yet, but I think she’s turning out to be a smart cookie; she just started walking this week.”

“Well, good for her! Where’s the father, by the way?”

Molly hesitated. Did she really want to talk about her ugly breakup with Blake, her ex-fiancé? Was she really ready to mention the very man that threatened to take the kids with him when he left? Molly must’ve hesitated for quite a while because she suddenly saw Tae-Hyung’s palm waving in her face.

“Earth to Molly!” Tae-Hyung teased. “What’s wrong?”

Molly shook it off. “Nothing relevant to you, it’s all good. Let’s just say you’ll hopefully never have to worry about him.” She smiled when she heard the first few notes of “Fallin’” by Alicia Keys start to play.

“You like this song,” Tae-Hyung said. He’d intended it as a question, but it came out sounding more like a statement.

“I do! It was my favorite song growing up.”

Tae-Hyung’s dark brown eyes widened. “Me too! We have something in common already.”

“Yeah, we do! Do you like Alicia Keys?”

“Yes, she was my celebrity crush as a small boy.”

The two of them paused when a waitress brought out some breadsticks and dipping sauce, and they dug in and continued the conversation.

“Who was your celebrity crush?” Tae-Hyung wanted to know.

“Well…” Molly laughed at the memory that was coming to her. “This is going to sound so silly, but when I was Gavin’s age, maybe a little older, I was convinced I was marrying Tim McGraw. I had this big cardboard cutout of him in my room, and whenever I played house, he’d be the dad while I was the mom.”

“Obviously, God had other plans, because you’re definitely not Faith Hill.” They laughed together. “Do you know I have both a single eyelid and a double eyelid?”

Molly nodded. “Yeah, I think I heard that somewhere; I’ve never seen it, though, because your hair is always in your face.”

Tae-Hyung frowned. “Do you not like that?”

“Oh, no, I think it’s cute! I was just saying, that was keeping me from seeing your eyelids.”

“Ah, I get you. Do you want to see them?”

“Absolutely!” Molly leaned over to get closer to Tae-Hyung’s eyes. Sure enough, one of them had a double eyelid and the other a single eyelid. “Oh, wow! I’ve got a birthmark on my hip, but that’s not quite as impressive as double eyelids.”

“Oh? What does it look like?”

Molly shrugged. “It’s just a random streak, nothing exciting.”

Molly and Tae-Hyung continued to talk throughout the meal, and by the end of it, Molly felt like they’d developed a strong connection. And she hoped Tae-Hyung felt the same way, too.

Chapter 5

“Thank you, sir,” the cashier said as he accepted Tae-Hyung’s payment for the meal. “Here’s your receipt; have a good rest of your night!”

“Thank you,” Molly and Tae-Hyung said in unison. Tae-Hyung bowed before the cashier and offered his arm to Molly.

“So, what did you think?” Tae-Hyung asked his date as he walked her out to her car.

“I really enjoyed it,” Molly admitted. “You made a very good first impression on me, and I think we should see each other more often.”

“I do, too,” Tae-Hyung agreed. “In fact, I want to see more of you tonight. Would you like to come to my place to meet the other boys?”

Molly stepped back slightly in surprise. “You did not just—”

Tae-Hyung cut her off with a laugh. “What, did you think you were just a fan to me? I wouldn’t have asked you out if that was true.”

“Actually, I did, but I’d love to go to your place. How about you lead me there, and I’ll follow? That way, we won’t have to drive all the way back here just to pick up my car.”

“That’s what I was thinking, too.”

Tae-Hyung ended up leading Molly to a gigantic, four-story mansion. She knew BTS’ house had to be big enough for seven, but she wasn’t expecting it to be this massive. Two spotlights illuminated the front porch, and there was also light coming from some of the windows.

“Welcome to our humble abode,” Tae-Hyung said when he and Molly were together again. “Shall we go inside?”

“Certainly,” Molly agreed, taking Tae-Hyung’s arm as they entered the mansion. Tae-Hyung announced his return in Korean, and Molly heard Nam-Joon asking from downstairs how the date went. He eventually came into view with Yoon-Gi and Ho-Seok in tow. Molly froze and almost fell to the floor in shock when she saw them, but Tae-Hyung caught her before she could.

“Hi, I’m M-M-M-Mol-Mol…” Molly stuttered, unable to say anything else.

“Molly?” Nam-Joon asked, earning a nod from Molly. “Yeah, V already told us about you. I’m glad to meet you!”

“Me too,” Yoon-Gi chimed in. The four of them sat down on the L-shaped couch so they could chat. “How long have you been ARMY?”

“About four years,” Molly replied. “I discovered y’all through randomly ending up on your Wiki page. I just wanted to know your names, but before I knew it, I was in too deep not to call myself a fan.”

Tae-Hyung laughed. “Isn’t that how everybody joins a new fandom, by just wanting to know their names?”

“Yeah, but it’s true!” Molly argued. “After I got to know y’all, I looked into your music and other content, and next thing, I was hooked.”

The group was then joined by the other four members, and Ji-Min asked Tae-Hyung if it was Molly whom he’d brought home.

“Yes, this is Molly,” Tae-Hyung said, resting his arm on top of the couch behind Molly.

“Glad to meet you,” Jung-Kook said. “I heard you’re a big fan of ours.”

“I am,” Molly affirmed with a smile.

“What is your favorite song?” Seok-Jin asked.

“I don’t know if I can choose just one; I love them all. My son really likes ‘Mic Drop’, though, and whenever I play ‘Dynamite’, my daughter will bounce to it.”

“That’s cool. How old are your son and your daughter?”

“Gavin is five and a half, and Emma is ten months.”

“Those are nice names,” Ho-Seok said. “Let’s see pictures!”

The seven boys crowded around Molly as she showed them some pictures she’d had on her phone.

“They’re both adorable,” Tae-Hyung commented. “Little Emma looks a lot like you do.”

Molly giggled. “She gets that a lot – Gavin, too.”

Molly had such a good time in BTS’ company that, before she knew it, it was almost eleven.

“I should probably head home now,” Molly said with a big yawn. “It’s getting late.”

“Are you okay to drive?” Tae-Hyung asked. “You sound a little sleepy.”

“No, I got this. I’ll be fine.”

“You’re blinking a lot now,” Nam-Joon pointed out. “I don’t want you getting into a crash because you fell asleep at the wheel.”

“Yeah, you definitely look ready to pass out,” Ji-Min added. “Won’t you stay here overnight? We’d love to have you.”

Molly yawned again. “Yeah, maybe you’re right; I am feeling pretty sluggish right now. Where can I sleep?”

“We have a guest room on the second floor,” Yoon-Gi stated. “You can sleep in there.”

“Okay, thanks.”

Molly climbed upstairs and went to bed, but not before texting Young-Mi what was happening and that she’d be back in the morning.

Blake Dailey pulled into the parking lot of the Holiday Inn in Beverly Hills just before midnight, after a full day of driving. He’d come to Los Angeles to try and patch things up with Molly, his ex-fiancée. He still hadn’t gotten over her, even after several months of being apart, and he felt ready to be a better partner than before.

After putting his car in park, getting out, and locking the door with his key fob, Blake headed inside to check in.

“Hey, have y’all got any room here?” Blake asked the young male receptionist.

“We sure do, sir,” he affirmed. “What brings you here?”

“I just came all the way from North Carolina to work things out with my ex,” Blake said with a smile. “I never did get over our breakup last year, and I’m hoping she feels the same way.”

“Ah, I see.” The receptionist did some typing before producing a room key. “You’re in room 205; good luck with your ex!”

“Thank you.”

Chapter 6

Tae-Hyung came out of his room at 8:30 the next morning to see that the guest room door was still closed, which meant Molly must still have been sleeping. When he knocked, he heard Molly say groggily, “Don’t come in, I’m sleeping.”

But Tae-Hyung didn’t listen. After he let himself in, he told her what time it was.

Molly stretched, yawned, and looked at her watch, noticing that she’d been sleeping for over nine hours now. “Holy shit…” she mumbled, much to Tae-Hyung’s amusement.

“Yeah, I think it’s time to wake up; it smells like Jin is making breakfast downstairs, if you want to join us.”

Molly felt her stomach grumbling. “Well, I am hungry,” she said, throwing back the covers and getting up. She then followed Tae-Hyung downstairs, where Seok-Jin, with the help of Yoon-Gi and Jung-Kook, was making a dish of French toast, eggs, and bacon.

“Good morning,” Molly greeted with another yawn. “Are we having French toast?”

“Yes, and we’re making enough so you can have some, too,” Seok-Jin answered.

“How did you sleep?” Jung-Kook asked.

“Like a rock. Your guest bed is comfier than mine, actually.”

“Awesome,” Tae-Hyung commented. “Breakfast will be ready soon – right, Jin hyung?”

“That’s correct,” Seok-Jin confirmed. “Give us about five or ten minutes.”

Blake pulled up to Molly’s place at 9:30 and parked in the driveway, ready to reconcile with Molly. He’d called her parents this morning to see where she lived now; they had strongly disagreed to this gesture, but Blake had been persistent in convincing them of his good intentions.

“You will NOT get back together with my daughter!” Mr. Wilkins had said. “Not only did you break her heart, but ever since y’all had Emma, you’ve turned into a total jerk!”

“Please, sir?” Blake had begged. “I can be a better partner; I know I can! I won’t break her heart again, I promise.”

The two men had gone back and forth for practically a half hour before finally coming to an agreement. Blake would have one chance to win her over again, and if he screwed up, he’d never be able to see her again.

In the present, Blake walked up the sidewalk to the front door and rang the doorbell. He was surprised to see a young Asian woman in the doorway when the door opened.

“Oh, hey,” Blake said. “Um… is Molly Wilkins home? I’m her ex.”

“No, she’s on a date,” the woman replied in a Korean accent.

“A date?” Blake repeated disappointedly. “Like with another dude?”

“Yes, I’m sorry. You can wait for her to get home, but I don’t think she’ll want you back; she seemed pretty excited about this date.”

Blake felt his face getting hot with anger, but he managed to keep his cool. “That’s what I’ll do, then,” he told the woman.

About twenty minutes later, Blake saw Molly pulling up in her car and watched as she parked it next to his.

“Hey, stranger!” Blake greeted after he rolled his window down.

“Fancy seeing you here, actual stranger,” Molly retorted when she was within earshot. “I thought I’d never see you again.”

“Well, baby, I came back for you. I never should’ve broken your heart and threatened the take the kids with me.”

Molly crossed her arms. “You’re right, you shouldn’t have. Now, get out of my sight before I call the cops!”

“Now look here,” Blake said, pointing an angry index finger at his ex-fiancée. “I did NOT drive all the way from Morrisville to hear you say that! You’re going to take me back right now!”

“Well, I’m sorry! I was just on a date because I found somebody who will actually treat me with respect!”

“Bullshit!”

Molly winced when Blake got out of the car, ready to hit her. She tried to run for the front door to hide inside, but just when she had her hand on the knob, Blake took off his belt and whipped her across the face with it. Molly then retaliated by trying to go for his gonads, but Blake was too quick. A punch to the face knocked her out in seconds.

Inside, Young-Mi was doing arts and crafts activities with the kids (Gavin was working on a model airplane and Emma was fingerpainting) when she thought she heard angry shouting coming from the front yard.

“What’s that?” Gavin asked, referring to the noise.

“I don’t know, but it doesn’t look good,” Young-Mi answered. “Just keep doing your projects while I check.”

“Okay.”

Young-Mi walked over to the bay window just in time to see Blake hitting Molly with his belt. Then, to her horror, he knocked her out with his fist and got into Molly’s car to get away. Luckily for Young-Mi, she was able to jot down Molly’s license plate number before it left her sight.

“Los Angeles 911, what’s the location of your emergency?” the dispatcher asked when she answered Young-Mi’s call.

“623 Redwood Street, Huntington Beach.”

Young-Mi gave the dispatcher all the details of what had just happened, and within five minutes, a cop car and an ambulance arrived at the scene.

When Molly came to again, she realized she was being checked by paramedics. She was angered when she also noticed her car missing.

“Where’s my car?” Molly demanded. “And what happened, anyway?”

“You got KO’d by your ex-boyfriend,” Young-Mi informed her. “And then, he sped away in your car.”

“What?! The fucking bastard! It had my signed BTS album in it!”

“Yes, the cops are chasing him down as we speak,” one of the paramedics informed her. “Do you think you can get up for us?”

Molly righted herself, but on the way up, she felt a sharp pang in her left ankle and stumbled.

“Are you alright, ma’am?” the EMT’s partner asked, pulling Molly up. “Do you need to go to the hospital?”

“Yes… please,” Molly said. “My ankle hurts really bad right now.”

“What hospital do you use?” the first EMT asked.

Molly told them, and they whisked her away to that hospital.

Chapter 7

While she waited to be seen, Molly got a call from Tae-Hyung.

“Hey, Tae-Hyung,” she answered. “What’s up?”

It sounded to Tae-Hyung like Molly was at a hospital somewhere; he heard the faint sound of somebody being paged in the background as she spoke.

“Molly? Are you alright?” Tae-Hyung asked. “Why are you at the hospital?”

“Oh, I’m at home,” Molly lied. “I’m just watching ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, is all.”

Tae-Hyung shook his head and chuckled. “I may not have known you for very long, but I can always tell when a girl is lying. What happened? Why are you at the hospital?”

Molly sighed. She still wasn’t ready to tell him about Blake, but at this point, she knew she had to for Tae-Hyung’s sake.

“Okay, I was beaten and knocked out by my ex, and I’m at the hospital because I think I broke my ankle when I fell.”

“Oh, no! Do you want me to join you?”

“I’m a grown woman; I can manage.”

Tae-Hyung didn’t like this answer at all, especially considering she’d just been beaten by a man she used to love. In his mind, no such woman should be left without a man by her side.

“I am coming over – bottom line. Which hospital?”

As soon as he hung up after getting his answer and saying goodbye, Tae-Hyung put his jacket on, grabbed his wallet and keys, and was about to leave when Nam-Joon stopped him.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“Molly was beaten by her ex, and she’s at the hospital with a broken ankle now. That’s why I’m going to see her.”

“Oh, my God!” Ji-Min interjected. “That’s horrible! Tell her we said hello, would you?”

“Of course!”

When he got to the hospital, he asked the receptionist where Molly Wilkins was.

“She’s on the second floor,” the man behind the counter told them. “The elevator is over there, and then you’ll take a right and be at her room.” He pointed behind him with his thumb to show where the elevator was located.

Tae-Hyung followed the directions, and when he reached Molly’s room, Tae-Hyung knocked on the door.

“Who is it?” Molly asked from inside.

“It’s Tae-Hyung!” he replied. “Can I come in?”

“Yeah, you can come in,” Molly said with a smile. “Young-Mi, would you open the door, please?”

Young-Mi did as she was told, and Tae-Hyung immediately approached Molly’s side when he saw her face covered in bruises.

“Molly how are you feeling?” he asked. “Your face is all black and blue.”

“Kind of anxious,” Molly admitted. “What if he tries to hurt me again?”

“We won’t let him. But you’re safe now; you should be lucky he didn’t hurt you even further.”

Molly let a tear fall down her face. “I know… but he traumatized me when he did this. I’ve never felt so violated in my life.”

Just then, there was another knock. Young-Mi opened the door to reveal a middle-aged doctor, probably in his fifties, with graying brown hair and beard. She then let him pass by to get to Molly.

“Hi, I’m Dr. Bradford, and I have your x-ray and CAT scan results,” the doctor said to Molly, shaking her hand. “How’s the ankle?”

“It still hurts,” Molly said. “I’ll give it a nine on the pain scale.”

“I can imagine; you had quite the ordeal this morning, didn’t you?”

“Uh-huh.”

Dr. Bradford mounted the x-ray image on a backlit screen and prepared himself for the explanation about to come out of his mouth.

“So, it looks like your ankle has what we call a bimalleolar fracture. You know how you have bony prominences on each side of your ankle?” Molly nodded. “Those are the lateral and medial malleoli, and both are broken. I’m afraid you’re going to need surgery to fix it.”

Molly groaned. “I was afraid of that. What about my CAT scan?”

“That’s good news: the scan didn’t show any signs of concussion. However, since you were knocked out, we’ll need to keep you here for 24 hours after your ankle surgery.”

“When will that be?”

“Probably this afternoon. The nurse tells me you last ate at 9 am, correct?”

“Yeah.”

“Then we’ll have to do it at three or later. In the meantime, we’ll put your ankle in traction and give you some IV pain meds. Does that sound like a plan?”

But Molly still had more questions. “How long is the recovery process? I’m a mom of two, and I don’t want to have to not take care of them.”

“Complete recovery takes anywhere from a month to a year. You’re young, though, so I don’t anticipate your recovery taking quite that long.”

Molly groaned again. “Great… just wonderful,” she said sarcastically.

“You’ll do fine, I’m sure. I’ll have a nurse come and get you set up, okay?”

“Alright, thanks.”
