Movie What are your favorite Korean Movies? (1 Viewer)

Everyone always seems to talk about kdramas, but not a lot talk about movies other than Parasite. What are your favorite Korean movies?
Mine is Silenced/The Crucible. It’s depressing and messed up but IMO it sends an important message and sheds light on a situation that should be known by all. If you want to watch it though I’d warn you that it involves sexual abuse of children so if that’s not something you can handle obviously don’t watch it because it’s quite heavy.

The film is set during the Japanese occupation of Korea and tells the story of two young girls who are captured by japanese soldiers

Spoiler: A few thoughts on The Silenced

Dam, maybe it was because i knew the real case and i had high expectations, but i felt like The Silenced didn't quite get to me as strongly as i wanted it to. I felt there wasn't enough emotional attachment and the pacing was a bit awkward to deliver the enormous weight of the story. I felt the biggest emotional and argumental weight of the movie was focused on the case and the corruption of the case instead of the town and the children.

Yeah i felt very frustrated and very angry of how the case was being handled, extremely, i teared up, but i felt the abuse of the children was kind of glossed over in pro of focusing on the corruption. Which i know is a very heavy topic in Korea and especially when it comes to this case, but don't think it's necessary to sacrifice the weight of one to heighten the other, i think both parts are very important to the plot and without one, the other loses a bit of impact even, not to mention i felt it was a bit unsensitive. Still liked it though, just hoped for a bit more. It's been years since i watched it either way so maybe if i saw it again i'd think differently, it's just what i remember off the top of my head was my first impression.

It's a pretty hard choice, ngl, i love (most) Bong Joon Ho's movies in different ways each - especially Memories of Murder. A Tale of Two Sisters was a very interesting ride, Assassination is very thrilling yet fun, My Sassy Girl is just great. All in all, most Korean movies that i've seen have been at the very least extremely interesting so it's hard.

However i think my almost undisputed favorites are A Taxi Driver, Taegukgi and The Admiral: Roaring Currents. All of them just so happen to be historical lol but y'know.

For me, it's The Handmaiden which is the Korean adaptation of the British novel Fingersmith.
It's set in the Japanese occupation of Korea in the 1930's and it's about a handmaiden who is meant to steal from her Japanese Heiress who is very wealthy, but instead falls in love with her.
Yes, it's a wlw movie.

On second thought, it may take me a while to watch this because already it has got me flooding with tears...
