Why do professors like not tell you-you have a big presentation thing when you have one?

It has happened twice this semester. Nobody told me I would have to make a poster and talk about my senior project at an event till one of my friends informed me that was one of the things you have to do. Like it's not on the syllabus and our professor never mentioned it but it's apparently like a requirement for the course.

Then in my creative writing course, we have to write a poem and read it to the upper-level class which once again my teacher never fucking mentioned it but my friend who previously had the class told me about it.

We do but they haven't touched the syllabus in like forever

This happens with most of the older professors, not age wise but the ones who've worked there the longest. They assume that students know what is required for their classes simply because they've taught the class for a long time, which makes zero sense because the fresh sets of students have never taken the class before.
