NFTs are a fad that make absolutely no sense to me even tho I've been following it for a while. They have net harm on the world because of their environmental impact and are in the end, schemes to line the pockets of already crazy rich people. I was hoping it would go away soon but unfortunately that doesnt seem to be the case.

There are two major reasons for it, as of what i understand: 1) Blockchain runs on massive servers that requires a lot of electricity to run, which translates to lot of energy which comes from burning fossil fuels, which means massive co2 emmissions which means global warming. it's a long process but the tl;dr is that the energy that is required to keep running the blockchain that keeps track of NFTs cause a lot of co2 emmissions which are v bad for the planet. 2) They're bought and sold using a crypto called Ethereum which needs to be mined and that wastes a ton of electricity, according to the below linked Verge article, it uses as much electricity as the nation of Libya, that too on purpose. This also leads to the same outcomes mentioned above.
