Panthers are not a type of big cat. Rather they’re an umbrella term for a large variety of cats, including jaguars, leopards, ect, typically black in color. However, cougars in Florida are also known as Florida panthers despite not being in the panthera family.

Technically some non black big cats are also part of the panthera family but people colloquially don’t tend to call them panthers.
