The court sentenced Jung Ilhoon to two years in prison suspended for three years of probation, 40 hours of a drug treatment course, and an additional fine of 120 million won (approximately $101,371).

The court stated, “In Jung Ilhoon’s case, he smoked, purchased, and sold [marijuana] for a long period of time. However, we took into consideration that he voluntarily stopped buying and smoking marijuana around January 2019, that he had no criminal record, that he tried to prevent recidivism by receiving psychiatric treatment and taking online lectures for drug addiction, and that his family showed willingness to guide him because he has relatively well-maintained social ties.”

That's a quote from the judge so no idea if that's a mistake or if the court case was pretty messy

There's definitely an error somewhere as it's mentioned in the first line but not the consideration line but just whether the error is solely on Soompi or the judge slipped up when speaking

For the sake of Ilhoon himself, I really hope it was a translation error on Soompi’s part.

tbh i still think the sentence is a bit much for a crime that didnt really harm anyone (im not pro-weed or anything but i dont think buying & consuming it should be punishable by law, especially if the defendant has no criminal record) but i guess considering korea's strict any drug policies this is kind of the best case scenario?

it's understandable that this is somewhat of a big deal since korea presents itself as a "drug free nation", but at least he got off with a slap of a the wrist (looking at possible punishment or punishment for other crimes in korea, it is a very light and somewhat useful punishment)
