I used to agree with that opinion too, but now I understand why it’s there and why it is an official position

We need more Co-Ed groups in kpop. Like companies are worried that the m & f members will start “dating” but like 1. Look at Kard; they’re Co-Ed and none of them are dating and have regular friendships like other ggs & bgs
2. Even if two members did start dating, wtf is wrong with that?

I did a research paper on the visual role and I'll just copy a portion from it:

The visual role in kpop groups is a very toxic factor that correlates with poor body image. The role of the visual has become so normalized in the K-pop industry as it has been there since the first generation of what is considered modern K-pop in the 90s. Beauty is often said to be in the eye of the beholder, thus creating discrepancies between who truly deserves the visual role. When a member does not fit this standard according to the general public, this can lead to cyberbullying of the individual. “These comments would take a massive toll on anyone’s mental health, especially that of idols, who are already experiencing pressure from multiple other aspects of their lives. Visuals often face a paradox; if all a certain idol has is their beauty, then they’re talentless and dragging down the rest of the group. However, if they’re talented in other ways but don’t fit the beauty standards well, then they don’t deserve to be the visual of the group and they’re dragging down the entire group’s appearance” (Wu, 2020).

I find it hard to find a positive reason for the position, so in my opinion I wish it didn't exist
