My mom just told me that my aunt, the one I was supposed to go see this spring (if you didn't know that, now you do), has terminal thyroid cancer with only six to twelve more months to live. I'm still trying to process the news a half hour later; it actually took some guts to even post this thread. Do y'all have any advice on how to cope with a dying relative? When my grandma died, it was so sudden that I didn't have time to react, so this is quite new to me.

oh my..

that's such hard news to hear T^T

my great-grandma died recently, so i do have some coping mechanisms that i used.

this may seem hard, but i recommend you talk to your aunt and spend as much time as you can with them. i didn't get to spend as much time with my great-grandma as i wanted to, since she's still back in japan and i couldn't fly back because of covid. if you can see her, try to make as much good memories as you can, and just talk. also, don't bottle up all the pain by yourself. that is what i did, and it led to a real low point in my life. i wouldn't allow myself to cry in front of others, or even by myself, and that really just took a toll on me emotionally. just let it out, whether it be by yourself in your room, or with people you trust. it would ease the pain a little bit, i think, since you have others to support you. im sorry about your aunt, and i can really relate to how you're feeling rn, so if you want you can always come to me to talk.

Well, when a close relative/friend of mine dies, I don't hold back anything and just cry; even if you can't cry, just talk. If you can't talk, then write how you feel. Keeping it in will only make you feel worse. Let yourself feel the pain and all of the emotions that you're feeling. If you've ever had any arguments or said something you regret, don't dwell on it; think about the good times you had with your aunt, not the times you wish never happened.
My dad died when I was 6 years old but since I was taken away from my biological parents so early, I never knew him and didn't affect me. Therefore, death doesn't always affect me as hard as other people. But when they're close to me, I can understand how devastating it is (altho I may not understand exactly how you feel)
Just try to maintain a normal lifestyle and take care of yourself; I hope your aunt enjoys the rest of her life, surrounded by those whom she loves and those who love her
Love, Areum :izhug:

wishing the best for her health.

i think the best way to cope with it, is talking to someone ur close w. your mom, or even your aunt. someone who can relate to u. and just be optimistic. dont let the bad thoughts conquer you. thats honestly the worst right now. i think its quite common and treatable, so no need to panic. take care of ur aunt and talk w her whenever u feel like. 🤍
