What do you think about "forest schools"? (2 Viewers)

The concept itself is incorporated into the "eco/environmental education" in New Zealand and some Scandinavian schools (and other schools around the world). Basically if you have heard about the trend of "forest schools" (technically, it is nothing too new, the idea is relatively old, but it is back in fashion and there was a big discussion about it some years ago). The concept of the "forest kindergartens" is that kids spend their days outside no matter the weather (though the school has to provide the building if the weather gets extreme so it´s not like they would be freezing to death in -25 degrees C but they are out in the forest when it´s below zero. A look of the "normal" education (the basic pre-school themes) happens outside like you can count trees and write with sticks etc.

The outdoor education is supporting the same principle but hardly anyone can image being education like that at Middle School or High School level. What do you think? let´s all live like transcendentalists or is that too much ?

We’ve actually been studying this in my program. I think the concept is quite fascinating really. Like I feel like childern are more able to understand the world around them better. And it’s constantly proven how beneficial fresh air/outdoor time is. And they’ll probably teach kids more applicable content that they can use in their daily lives as well as life skills

I have been feeling horrible the past couple of months due to how terrible everyone at work is, so I had to make some challenges myself to keep my spirits up. This month and a half I have "no printing" challenge as not to waste any paper because we should love mother Earth (come on, you can SEE them rolling their eyes, can´t you? :D :D :D) and the next month, in June, I am planning to take all my classes outside. I have informed everyone about that and you would be so surprised at the reaction! I can´t wait to do that !!! it is gonna be super hard but yayyyyy, if everyone is alive and gets back, we are fineeeee :D

personally i could never, i have a huge phobia of insects (and i had it my whole life) so the thought of spending a whole day in a forest absolutely terrifies me. i think it's good to not have kids sit in the same room the whole time but they should be more considerable towards the weather, if i had children i don't think i'd send them to a school that makes them sit in the forest in the winter.

personally i could never, i have a huge phobia of insects (and i had it my whole life) so the thought of spending a whole day in a forest absolutely terrifies me. i think it's good to not have kids sit in the same room the whole time but they should be more considerable towards the weather, if i had children i don't think i'd send them to a school that makes them sit in the forest in the winter.

well, it´s more about the right clothes rather than the right weather :)

my elementary didnt allow children to stay inside during reces and we did have forest days when we went to nearby nature reserves to study finnish nature and even if i had personal not so pleasant things that happened during these i wouldnt want it any other way. I think its very healthy and good for kids to be as much as possible outside and same goes for teens and adults but my 7-9th grade school didnt enforce being outside and neither did my vocational school

The no printing challenge sounds like a good idea! We really do need to start taking care of the earth we have and might as well start instilling that in children when they’re young

the amount of paper used in schools is just insane. we´d save a couple of forests if we just learnt to use what we already have. computers, tablets, mobile phones.

Even if students typed their notes on a tablet or a computer, that would save so much paper. Just think of how many notes end up in the trash at the end of the semester

And what do these standardized tests really teach kids? If anything it increases anxiety

I think the idea is interesting but like eclipsoul said, anyone with bug phobias would have a horrible time. I think it would be cool to do maybe for a class or two though.
