I think a lot of people do this, not only Koreans. It's natural to stick to a group of people who are alike. It is ironic though wanting to study abroad for new experiences then stick to the same things. I think it's easier for certain people to stick with the same group then gradually introduce themselves to what's new. Also if we turn things around, I heard it's hard to make friends when you're a foreigner in South Korea so...

It’s an interesting comparison. I lived in Korea for 6 years, and in that time I had mainly Korean friends, but was a little out of the norm. I wouldn’t say it was hard to make korean friends, but it can certainly be easier to stick within foreigner circles, and so I imagine it’s the same for Korean students in the states. When you move to a far away country it’s just a lot easier to make friends with people who are similar to you. My circumstances were different as I really didn’t get on with the fellow teacher at my school so I ended up befriending a Korean, and we became flat mates, I made my friends from their wider circle and dated girls from that circle too - but I knew quite a few expats that didn’t learn very much korean while they were out there, muddled by with English on the day-to-day, and made friends with other expats first and foremost.

When you move to a far away country it’s just a lot easier to make friends with people who are similar to you.

Exactly, you basically stick along with your fellow foreigners until you slowly befriend someone from the country you moved into.

That's cool you managed to make Korean friends. Of course the experience is different for everyone. From stories I've read from other people, it seems some had difficulty? I even remember watching a video of a guy saying ''they'll always see you as a foreigner'' and I thought that was rough, maybe a little exaggerated? or not.
