Devil Idol
She was a young girl like any other, one with petty dreams and foolish ambitions. I ask you to think back to when you were but a child of 12 years old, were you not the same? What dreams did you once have that now lie abandoned with the acceptance of your mediocre life? What ambitions have you cast aside because the sacrifices seemed too great or the life you wanted to gain appeared out of reach?
Well, that is where this one differs from you. For she took matters into her own hands. She grabbed destiny by the horns, you could say. My horns. No sacrifice was deemed too great. Even when the price to pay was her very soul.
Iâll admit, it was this bold and brazen attitude that first caught my eye. How could I refuse her six demands the night I was summoned? I have them here still, written and signed in her blood no less.
I like to read them from time to time.
âTo be a famous singerâ, âto be incredibly beautifulâ, âto have lots of adoring fansâ, âto have nice long legsâ, âto have lots and lots of moneyâ, and of course, âto have a cute dogâ.
You might say at the time she lacked wisdom and knew not the bargain she was entering, but I feel no guilt in offering her contract. If you despise me for it, I relish in it. All humans must live by the decisions they make at such an age. You yourself are the same, now living a life governed by decisions made back then, be it in choosing which studies to pursue or with whom to make friends. Life falls like a line of dominoes and the first is struck much earlier than we dare admit. I have done nothing but offer her a glimpse of glory and a taste of power that is obtainable to any who truly strive for it.
It comes at a price, but then what doesnât? A list of six, given to her in turn, and now six years later, I come to collect my due...

At last he appeared, walking across the intersection, skin the colour of blood with two impressive horns erupting from his forehead. His black leather trench coat trailed behind leaving coiling wisps of smoke. Soojung watched him approach.
âYouâre late,â she said.
âYou sound annoyed little one,â said the Devil with a smirk. âIs this a display of insolence I wonder? Let me give you some advice. One should not be so brash towards another that owns their very soul.â
âIâm sorry,â she said, âIâm just worried about being recognised out here, Iâm somewhat the celebrity you may recall.â She buried her face into her scarf and pointed at the billboard that dominated the view from the intersection. It was of her wearing a dress and holding the latest foldable smartphone for all to see.
âAh yes, I had considered purchasing one myself until I remembered I am evil made manifest and need not these earthly devices. Still, your magnetism had me enthralled for a moment, it was interesting to be on the receiving end for once,â said the Devil with a grin that revealed two rows of porcelain white teeth.
The two began to walk down the busy high street in the Jongno district of Seoul.
âI find it amusing. You are walking beside the Prince of Darkness, and yet you worry about being seen?â
âBoo! Thatâs not fair and you know it. People canât see you.â
âMost people cannot see me,â corrected the Devil as he gestured to an old man in front of them who had been busy collecting cardboard boxes for recycling but was now staring with eyes wide, body frozen in fear. The pair ignored him and walked a few more blocks before stopping. âWe are here.â
The Devil pointed to a towering skyscraper opposite that lorded over the street. While the building was modern and impeccably designed, the front of the first story had the remnants of an old ChosĆn gatehouse arranged around the revolving doors.
âSix hundred years ago, a Confucian school stood here, now only the front of the entranceway remains. If you look closely they have defiled the Dancheong colouring of the wood with Kabbalistic wards. Usually I would admire such blasphemy but in this case it denies me entry to this place. The CEO of this corporation, Mr Kang, runs a satanic cult of sorts behind these closed doors and has decided I am not to be invited. It is problematic.â
âProblematic how?â
âWell, in this case, he claims to be the Devil incarnate. As you see me standing before you now, you can assume this to not be true. âSamaâelâ he has named himself, and now this cult has grown considerable in its influence. Tomorrow evening they will have a gathering to indoctrinate new members from the city elite. A party, you would call it. I want you to deliver a message to Mr Kang at this party. Humiliate him for all to see. This is to be your first repayment for our contract. Iâll leave the details to you.â
âUrgh. Do I really have to go through with this?â Soojung asked.
The Devil clicked his blood-red fingers and a sword of black obsidian and flame appeared in his hand, he brought the blade close to his face to examine its keen edge. âIt was the twelve barbarian kings of Mesopotamia who sought to betray me that I last slew with this sword. Perhaps the next head it takes could be that cute dog of yours? Pampoom I believe he is called.â
âYouâre a monster. Fine, Iâll do it.â

It was close to 2AM. Soojung had spent the evening mingling with guests at the party, all the time trying to get closer and closer to Mr Kangâs inner circle while avoiding offers of soju and keeping her glass filled with water instead. Iâll need a clear head if I am to pull this off.
She was not the only celebrity in attendance of course, but with her current fame and rising popularity she had been the centre of attention and subjected to many probing and thinly-veiled questions gauging if she would be suitable for this cult of theirs.
âWe have friends in high places. Perhaps you would be interested in meeting one of them?â asked a lady in her late forties.
âFriends in high places you say, or do you actually mean friends in âlow placesâ?â Soojung jested and the group around her roared with laughter.
Just like Pampoom, I have you all eating out of my god damn hand.
Now it was 4AM and she was sat in a private karaoke booth, alone with Mr Kang who had just passed out drunk midway through his painful rendition of an old ballad. This is it. Itâs now or never.
She opened her handbag and drew forth the cast-iron brand she had bought off the internet the day before. It was akin to a cattle-brand, one used for searing a mark onto a cowâs hind, but much smaller. She marveled at the shape of its tip as she heated it under the blue flame of the gas stove built into the table of the karaoke booth. Iâm going to make a lot of enemies doing this... it better be worth it.
Mr Kang woke up just as the tip of the brand began to glow white. It took him a moment to focus but as soon as he saw what the girl was doing he fell out his seat and tried to scamper away across the floor.
âW-who are you?â he pleaded as she stood over him.
âI come here to deliver a message, Samaâel.â
âW-who sent you, the Church?â
Soojung laughed and said, âyou couldnât be more wrongâ, before thrusting the hot iron brand on his forehead, itâs tip was shaped as a cross.

The Devil sat in the passenger seat of Soojungâs new Lamborghini Diablo, legs up on the dashboard, wiping tears of laughter from his eyes. He had been giggling like a lunatic for the past five minutes.
âIâll admit,â he said, âIâm impressed with you little one. It amuses me to no end that this self-styled Samaâel, the âdevil incarnateâ, will now have a cross forever branded upon his face. And you say Americans use these novelty brands on beef steaks?â
Soojung nodded and said, âYes, I found it online by chance when ordering utensils for our dorm. So if youâre this satisfied, does this mean youâll end our contract early?â
âNo, no,â he smirked, âIâm thinking the opposite.â
Her eyes widened, âPlease, you cannot!â The Lamborghini stalled and Soojung cursed as she restarted the engine. âUrgh. I still canât believe I let you talk me into buying this thing. Who drives a manual in this day and age?â
âThe Lamborghini Diablo is the greatest car ever made, a true pinnacle of human ingenuity, and I will not hear a bad word against it. Anyway, it is it time for you to fulfil the second part of this bargain.â
âUrgh, fine. Letâs get this over with as quickly as possible. Where are we headed?â
âKeep going straight for now. Iâll tell you when weâve arrived...â
