because of many reasons (black plague, little ice age, crusaders, etc) feudalism ended so the slaves called serfs started working for money. now that these serfs had money, they wanted to buy houses near merchants' shops so that was the beginning of towns.

those towns were called burgs...
and the people were called BURGERS
