The Mansfield bar is a bar on the back of trucks used to prevent cards from going underneath trucks in accidents. They are allowed to be a maximum of 22 inches above the ground. They were named after the actress Jayne Mansfield, who died in 1967 after her card slid under a truck, killing her and her front seat passengers. The bars were proposed soon after her death, but not fully implemented until 1998.

The one thing I find really disappointing is how when a celebrity dies somehow in a preventable manner it inspires stuff like this, but when it’s an average person nothing happens. It should have been taken care of before, an estimated 200-300 people in the US alone died each year from this.

This is, unfortunately, not uncommon. With the food industry it took the muckraker Upton Sinclair's 1906 publication of The Jungle to inspire public outrage about the working conditions of the meat processing industry. Even here, the big outrage was directly because of the *food condition* and less about the the *horrible working conditions*. The same can be said by looking at the New York Triangle Shirt waist Factory Fire and the doors that that tragedy opened in regards to worker safety.

Society is the macro level, so unless tragedies like this happen on the micro level and are projected through media to the macro level, they unfortunately go missed very very frequently.
