One you had very little expectations for and was pleasantly surprised by?

Verity by Colleen Hoover. I do not like romance typically and if I do it has to be very specific to what I like...so Colleen Hoover is not an author I like very much or care for her books too much either. I was recommended this book but some co-workers who I was not too familiar with their tastes in book so it was kind of a big leap or whim I guess to pick up this book.

BUT I really liked it. I felt nervous, on the edge of my seat, my mind racing, and then just being flabergasted by it. It's not a top notch thriller/mystery but omfg IS IT ADDICTIVE and good.

So I tend to favor Fantasy books the most which will be obvious from the photo I'm about to post BUT I still bounce around from different genres. I am shocked though that Horror was my second most-read genre this year since I think in previous years that's been rare. But I finally got to read some of Junji Ito's works and that shot the number up considerably.

As a person who also loves fantasy books, which ones would you recommend? I’m always looking for recommendations. I love to read lol.

Oooh I’ve actually never read a book by Colleen Hoover because I always hear so many mixed opinions idk if I’d like any of them. But Verity is one I hear more good than bad of, for some reason I thought it was a fantasy though

As a person who also loves fantasy books, which ones would you recommend? I’m always looking for recommendations. I love to read lol.

So my favorite fantasy read this year was definitely Six Crimson Cranes. It's about a young princess with 6 brothers who wound up cursed because she saw something she was not supposed to see and then she is banished and cursed with silence essentially as well as being unrecognizable to the people who are in her kingdom and country. She has to find a way to break the curse and there is just something so whimsical about it, just feels like a classic fairytale.

I always recommend the new Marissa Meyers I feel like but Gilded also has a very fairytale-esque vibe because it's a retelling of Rumpelstilskin but it has this massive ominious background to it and the main girl is considered to be cursed by a God to be a liar. It's just amazing and dark. I will say I hate the romance aspect in it though as it's very rushed but please check TW's if you may be susceptible. It's pretty dark.

which horror/thriller ones would you recommend ?

I read one of Tiffany D. Jackson's first horror novels this year and though I think some classify it more as a thriller I personally REALLY enjoyed it. It was White Smoke. I plan on picking up her new Carrie retelling this year at some point. But it's about a young girl and her messy family situation moving to a newly developed neighborhood as a result of a contract her mother landed. Things are weird here, off, not right, and the locals have it rough to say the least. It's just...ugh I was on edge through most of the book.

If you like Gothic Horror at all I highly recommend Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This was such a slow build but it was worth it and I was just heart-pounding, nail-bitingly invested, and worried the entire time.

Most of my horror was Junji Ito this year or me continuing the Tokyo Ghoul Manga. Both are fantastic though Tokyo Ghoul isn't scary compared to Junji Ito's collections.

I think White Smoke and Mexican Gothic were the only written ones that really got to me. The rest of the horror I read was ok same with the thriller. Though I would highly recommend the "A Good Girl's Guide To Murder Trilogy". Not super thriller-y BUT it has it's moments and the mystery along the way is intense.
