AOA has been showing up in my YT autoplay, and it made me wonder whatever happened to Youkyung.
For those who weren't around (or didn't pay attention to them) in 2012, AOA first started off as a half-band, half-dance group with the intent being that "AOA" would have both band (Black) and dance (White) versions. Youkyung was only part of the band (called AOA Black). This started off simply enough with the group's first two songs both getting what was promised and then AOA Black did a standalone comeback, Moya.
After Moya, FNC tried to go all in on the dance half, leaving her out of the Confused follow-up (which did not do as well as Moya, btw). But this business approach worked out when Miniskirt unexpectedly did astronomically well in 2014, selling almost 10x what Moya managed. After Moya, FNC then sat on Youkyung's contract for another three years before releasing her in 2016, promising she'll totes be back with AOA Black in the future, but they never did the band half again. I always felt sad for Youkyung, partially because AOA Black is a really nice band (Choa has so much charm as the front-woman) and partially because Youkyung signed up to the only company (at the time) releasing idol band music only to get shoved into the back. I mean, literally, in Moya, they show her getting squeezed out of the group at 2:10-2:12. She gets more coverage in Show Champion's performance than she does from her own company. A lot of Ace of Elvis at the time fed into the narrative that she didn't deserve to be treated well, because she was "just" a drummer.
So I was curious: whatever happened to her?
It turns out, she's still super active as a drummer! She's reformed into a trio called uni, which just released a song called Dive.
And she posts a ton of drummer covers on her personal YouTube channel.
I'm glad to look up a former idol and see them doing so well.
