I was at my school working on a group project in one of those study rooms you can book. It’s not in a building that I’m familiar with. Anyways we were working away and we hear someone shout “if you’re gonna be in my country, speak my language”. What the fuck??? All of us looked at each other so flabbergasted. What is wrong with people??

My mom’s husband thinks that way, he’s said it many times and one time I was annoyed and also felt incredibly sorry to the people he was talking about (we were in a national park and he was saying things like this behind them as we walked because they apparently were walking too slow for him.) Anyways, I asked if he thinks the same towards everyone who doesn’t speak English, even people on my biological dads side of the family (which is Hispanic). He said “yes”
Then when I mentioned that when we lived in Korea that we didn’t speak their language his response was “we tried.”

Unfortunately my dad has a similar mentality (he’s white, for context). They don’t consider how hard ot is to learn another language, and English is not an easy language. I’m currently re-learning French and its HARD

I’m sorry but thats not trying. And on top of that, people should feel safe enough to speak whatever language they want. I know personally I’m more confident in English than I am in french and can express myself better so the same should go for others no matter the language: speak where you feel comfortable
