Girls' Generation a.k.a. SoShi a.k.a. SNSD.

I know there were other artists in 2nd generation prior to GG, but I think GG really blew up with their popularity and made people domestically in South Korea and beyond take notice. So, a lot of people who were never into KPOP probably became interested watching one of their MV's and they were the gateway into the industry.

I think a lot of the first gen groups contributed to the expansion of KPop, especially groups like Girls Generation, Big Bang or artists like PSY. They were some of the first artists that I know of that broke into the American market and met a lot of American celebrities

Every K-pop group and Soloist group has some contribution to pave this road for newer artists that continue to pave the way

Several different artsists are responsible. I bolded the groups that I think are most responsible in their generation for the growth of K-Pop.

1st Gen - TVXQ, Baby Vox, hot, god, Super Junior, Fin.KL, BoA, SES, Big Bang
2nd Gen - Wonder Girls, SNSD, KARA, T-Ara, EXO, Beast, SHINee
3rd Gen - Twice, BTS, Blackpink, Seventeen, NCT, GOT7, GFriend, Mamamoo
4th Gen - Ateez, aespa, (G)-Idle, Enhyphen, TXT, Itzy, Stray Kids, IVE, New Jeans

I didn't bold any in 4th gen because it's too soon to tell although IVE, New Jeans, TXT, & Stray Kids would be the most responsible imo at the moment.

Overall out of the ones that I've listed here's my Top 10 ranking of who I think is most responsible, but none of them account for more than 5% of the broader Korean wave. In my opinion, the broader Korean wave is built off successive generations with each one contributing more than the last, but without the initial 1st gen the Korean wave would've never existed.

i think twice should be higher, considering they’re the reason kpop is so famous in japan rn and kpop groups have jlines

ps: boa, tvxq and to some extent kara did pave the way in japan but after them it was twice who single handedly took it to new highs

Oops sorry I misspoke, second gen yes haha. But I agree, I think the impact from KPop wouldn’t have been the same without the contribution of all of those groups and artists combined.
