I dont think one single group or soloist can be considered the one who paved the way. Some groups are popular internationally while others have huge fanbases in Korea. Some groups/soloists are huge digital sellers, while others are stronger with physical sales. There have been huge differences in the layout of kpop between 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations. Kpop has been around for decades and its impact has only grown thanks to social media and globalization

Honestly tho i agree. The music scene changed so much, especially after the pandemic. Before 1 million sales were unheard of unless a group was SUPER famous, and i mean SUPER SUPER bts, bp and big bang kinda. But now i can name several groups that had more.

Also about charts ... Most of the time it shows general popularity, but sometimes it chooses a song and an artist by luck. Some groups that made all kills on charts disbanded recently too... You need to have fandom, general public's interest, US music market's attention, million sales and all kills on charts to be considered someone.

I think among all these fights about who "paved the way" we fans forget that every group and singer has a limited contract, and even those sometimes end unexpectedly early. Let's enjoy the groups together and the music playing right now instead of chasing awards.

HARD AGREE. So many different groups come to mind when it comes to popularity in regards to popularizing Kpop globally (in different countries) and restarting the album buying scene and charts as well.

Big Bang, Kara, Wonder girls, PSY, EXO, BTS, Blackpink, etc.

THE list goes on and on. Yes, some groups have made MASSIVE impacts but not ONE group was SOLELY responsible for Kpop becoming what it is today.

I agree to an extent. From my view, multiple groups have paved the way basically. So yeah, not just one group has had a big impact, but certain groups have been very impactful and made it easier for following generations to in a way follow them and go on to make history themselves.

Yes I agree with you there. I just meant there isn’t a single group that paved the way 100%. It isn’t so clear cut.

I think the main thing people miss when defining a generation is that a generation is not defined strictly by the groups it is defined by the state of the industry.

Like 1st Generation was when you pretty much had to buy albums to listen to songs so album sales were massive then 2nd Generation introduced digitals but this also started at a time when Kpop was effectively dead in Korea until Wonder Girls became popular that is.

The introduction of digitals also hurt album sales but then came 3rd generation where album sales started to pick back up and have since then with digitals being strong too.

What would I say defines 4th generation differently? Well downloads have tanked completely and we're now in a streaming era pretty much.

You can't fairly compare songs across generations when the industry is different like I can say Rough probably has 5x the downloads of a 4th gen girl group hit song but that doesn't mean Rough did 5x better when downloads are one of the main things different between 3rd and 4th generation

I half agree, half disagree with this. Maybe one person didn't pave the way, but you can't necessarily say NOBODY did. Like, it wasn't just the Backstreet Boys who paved the way for modern boy bands (I just like to think so bc biased lol), there was also New Kids on the Block, 'N Sync, 98 Degrees, O-Town, LFO, Westlife, BBMak, etc.
