Sensitive “Tone Deaf” and “Blind Spot” (1 Viewer)

Do you guys find these terms ableist?
I was watching a TikTok/reel/short. There was one talking about some author apologizing for a coloring book. The commentator reacting to the authors posts then said the author was being ableist by saying it was “tone deaf.”

Continued to scroll the comments and found one person ask, “What are your thoughts on ‘blind spot?’”

Personally, I think we’ve reached a period where everything has become so insensitive and I’m just scared to say the wrong thing now. Like I need to research every word I say before I say it? >.>

I don’t understand how they were ableist because they aren’t referring to a blond or deaf person. Someone please educate me if they are because I’m genuinely confused. I would rather know and not say terms if they are offensive rather than using them and offending someone without realizing

The implication from the commentator was because it uses the word “deaf” in a negative way. This is the clip. It’s in the end so ignore the beginning. Words can mean different things, both positive and negative, when combined with other words though so I don’t understand when it’s become this specific.

Well... I'm not deaf or blind, so I don't know.

I'm pretty used to hear the word "tone deaf", which I often have associated with when someone is a bad singer.

But I sometimes do try to not use words that offend others.

The implication from the commentator was because it uses the word “deaf” in a negative way. This is the clip. It’s in the end so ignore the beginning. Words can mean different things, both positive and negative, when combined with other words though so I don’t understand when it’s become this specific.

I’ve watched the whole video but I still don’t understand it completely maybe this is stretching it too far? Or am I the insensitive one?

I have a legitimate question - why is there more uproar abt these two than dumb being used most commonly to mean stupid when dumb actually, originally, and the main meaning is unable to speak/mute, hence the term "deaf & dumb" for those who are both deaf & mute, and it's possible to be "dumb" in this sense without being deaf as well

I mean I am definitely not the most un-ignorant, or politically correct or any of that, but I have known dumb meant mute since I was somewhere around 6 -8? Bc of trumpet of the swan

I think for this it’s either you know the original meaning or you only know the current meaning.
But people go back and include the original meaning for other words when saying something is offensive.

Lame is clear - having a lame leg, etc.

nuts - nuthouse

crazy - insane, psychotic

I use “I’m dying” a lot when I’m really into a someone’s music and all their promo and I’m already started to second guess typing it. Not offensive to anyone I think but if someone takes it the wrong way. You get what I mean?

Eventually , we’ll be reduced to not communicating if this keeps up.

You can google peoples opinions on more appropriate words from their view. For crazy some say senseless, irrational, outrageous, enthusiastic (?), and so on. Plenty of people don’t have an issue with those words though even if they’re in the supposed targeted group, like I don’t have any issue with crazy being used in any way even though it’s supposedly targeting those with mental health problems like me. Like if someone gets offended yeah don’t use it around them if you can but I think you’ll get by fine without needing to change your whole manner of speech most of the time.
