Get more interested in driving? I need to get my license soon, i've been avoiding it like the plague, but i need to try and make it soon cause my parents are sick of having to take me by car to places. I'm just terrified of driving and know shit about cars, like legit idk why we need to shift gears. I know it' s related to the fuel pumps and stuff ...

Any words of encouragement? Will i like driving after i start? I drove a lil bit with my family before, i looked like an elephant in a porcelain store ...

I completely understand your fear, I’m the exact same way. My parents still drive me places even though they are tired of it. I’m absolutely terrified of driving. I’m not sure the reason behind your fear but once we try to break down those walls everything else becomes more manageable.

As with anything, it takes practice. Find an empty parking lot to start with, and then move to roads way out in the middle of nowhere. Just so you can get practice in a controlled and empty or less trafficed environment.

You just have to start doing it and keep doing it. It'll take time to get more comfortable, but you gotta stick with it.

It's always scary at first. It's best to drive locally when you first get your license so you will get more comfortable with it. If you find yourself not getting used to it you can always get a driver instructor, even if it's just for a few lessons. That can be a bit expensive though.

My fear may be due to the frequent car crashes in our country, me not being able to imagine the car in a space. Like i cant imagine where the back would go if i turn, no coordinance, even if i look in the mirrors. Im afraid ill scratch it. Also terrified of instructors that scream at yiu, at policemen that scream at you and at failing my exams and my family getting dissapointed.

Practicing on side roads that don’t get a lot of traffic and parking lots were a good first step that my parents took me out to do. I did however stop after a failed driving test (I have my G1, was taking the test for a G2). And then there was another incident which stopped me from driving altogether. But eventually I should learn. I’m wishing you the best of luck!

If a car had only one gear setting, that would mean it needs to be able to start the car, travel at 100 mph, and climb hills all in one. That’s not realistically possible, or if it is it’s very inefficient. Heres a graph showing the power and speed limitations of the different gear ratios. As you can see the force at the wheels and road speed vary greatly with the gear ratio. So for most cases if you’re on a highway you’ll likely be at one of the top gears because you don’t need as much force and need speed, whereas starting a car and climbing a hill you’d need a lower one because physics. Now if your question is why don’t we have cards that do that for us, well we do. Standard automatic transmissions change the gear train automatically in different circumstances, there is at times a slight lag if you go from flat ground to a steep hill possibly but it catches on quickly. Continuous variable transmission also changes automatically but it does so using pulleys apparently, and you can basically get every size you need, and it does all that automatically for you. Some people don’t like CTV though because it doesn’t usually cause jerking movements or stuff that manual or automatics have with their presets, so some paces water down CTV and make it more limited so that it does cause some jerking (still less than other types I’m pretty sure) to make people happy which I find kind of funny. That being said, Europe doesn’t sell many automatics. Like a source I saw said 80% of cars in Europe sold are manual, vs the 3% in the US, so if you wanted to ditch manual and get automatic you could but it’s less likely to happen.

You won’t need to worry about shifting into and out of different gears quite as much if you get an automatic transmission, which is what I learned how to drive. If that’s an option, I suggest it. Also what other people said about practicing in a small area like a parking lot, and stick to areas you’re familiar with so you don’t get lost. That’ll only stress you out more and that’s the last thing you need when you’re just learning how to drive. Just take it nice and easy and learn at your own pace, don’t pressure yourself to learn it too quickly or faster than you’re ready to.

Wow... Ngl this is some big ass information to swallow. But i kinda get it , also yeah we mostly have manual cars here.

Ngl I can’t imagine learning with a manual right away, I don’t know how Europeans and other primarily manual countries do it :jisoosmh:
