I was reading about dogfighting, and there's a lot of it that is messed up of course, what it does to dogs is incredibly horrible, not to mention other animals (such as cats) who are used as bait and killed by the dogs. But one part that really bothered me was law enforcements attitude towards dog fighting. Supposedly, it was illegal in all US states by 1976, but for many years was not enforced all that much. However, when people started to realize dog flighting went hand in hand with other crimes that had human victims, they decided it was a much bigger issue than before. I only really saw that in 2 articles, most didn't bring up the connection, but if that's true it's so fucked up. Not being willing to save dogs but being eager to when it relates to human victims as well? I don't get how people can be like this

Yeah unfortunately that doesn’t surprise me. I read a book about it (dogfighting and other crimes within it), I wish I could remember what it was called but I read it so long ago. But the only reason that particular dogfighting ring was shut down was because the people who ran it partook in gang crimes, the dogfighting ring was just something they discovered upon catching all the men that took part in the gang activity.

Controversial but I feel like the new and legal form of dog fighting is sending them against boars. Sure the boars need to be gotten rid of, but it's so incredibly dangerous on the dog's side and why make the boar suffer when you could just use a gun? Silly that animal rights groups are going after hairless dogs and whiskers instead when pit bulls are getting gored

Well the dog is often needed to find a boar I think, humans generally can’t track well enough to find the boar. Dogs are way better at that. From what I’ve read they do use guns, once they get the boar cornered, not in all cases but a lot (the alternative is stabbing the boar which is messed up). I’m also not sure that pit bulls are the most often used dog for boar hunting, I know they are used but I’ve seen a lot of other breeds listed before them. Anyways I do agree that using dogs for boar hunting is pretty cruel, they don’t kill all that many either so it’s not like they’re single handedly holding back the population of boars, far from it.

There aren't enough people to get angry about these things unfortunately. Often these types of crimes aren't even investigated because the police "don't have time or money". Which is weird. Just this morning I watched a video of a sheriff that just got convicted of civil rights abuses and is facing 10 years in prison. Yet they let him retire at 8k a month pension...

I'm a-ok with using them for tracking and catch dogs, but there are definitely hunters out there that will just sic a pack of dogs onto the boar and Pit Bulls are the most used for that. They are the ones who give hog dogs a bad name :( it's definitely kept more hush hush but you can see this type of dog in some APBT pedigrees now instead of the old fighting dogs. Hog dog trials are unrelated

I read a lot from an APBT breeder that was doing a deep dive as to what the breed is like and actual fighting dogs definitely still exist in numbers too sadly :(

Even catching dogs can be dangerous tbh because a spooked boar could injure them. And yeah fighting dogs are common still, too many people partake in the activity to this day
