When talking to certain family members (who are bilingual too) whenever I talk to quietly and that ask me to repeat myself I switch languages (I raise my volume too dw) and it’s like why? They know English, they know Russian, the repeat yourself isn’t because they don’t speak that language. But my brain automatically does it

My brother and I have this great harmony of mixing English, gujju, and Spanish.
But whenever we try to match the language to a family member, they always ask us to repeat ourselves and it just ends up being English with an accent accent.

My English is definitely better, but the first language I learned was Russian. I think I was 4.5 ish years old when I really started learning English.

Oh ok I see, my family is mostly Spanish speaking. I speak to my mom in english and she speaks to me in spanish, we can’t speak the other language, but we both understand each other lol

Understandable, I have siblings that speak English almost all the time unless talking to relatives who don’t know any English, then they painfully try to string words together in Russian. But both of them understand Russian decently, much better than speaking for them. They were also the two born in the US which probably explains some of it, it’s not like my sister and I had time to pick up languages while in Russia because we were too little, but even in the household we were speaking Russian more than English, with a heavier Russian lean at the beginning of my life that tapered off rather quickly. My parents both speak Russian at home still but school and being out with people exposed us to English more as we got to school age.

Yeah, immigrant families and such. My parents weren’t born here and I was but only my mother speaks Spanish the majority of the time and my main language is English. Regardless, always better to have more than one language at hand (and also you’re much cooler like that).

someone my family members who dont speak english would have me repeat sumthn in arabic and id explain what i said for a good 56 minutes to realize that they dont speak fuckin english

we're trilingual, sorta - English, Spanish, and German. I say sorta bc we don't have big conversations in Spanish or German, but sometimes, we'll ask each other how the other is in Spanish. lol it's bc I took German in high school and am currently teaching myself Spanish.
