As the NHL continues to fight for more inclusion in the league, multiple teams have scheduled Pride Nights, where players wear jerseys celebrating and honouring the LGBTQ2IA+ community during the warmups.

Though many teams like the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames have celebrated Pride Night without a hitch, other teams have seen players withdraw themselves from the inclusion-friendly warmups. Some teams scrapped wearing the Pride jerseys altogether.

As Ilya Lyubushkin of the Buffalo Sabres becomes the latest NHL player to veto the opportunity to wear the Pride jersey during the team’s warmup, 2023 has seen the most controversy surrounding these nights of inclusion and acceptance.

My honest opinion is: if your religion is terrified of a naturally occurring color, then your religion is, at best, weird af. STFU and wear the clothes you've been paid to wear.

If you're at risk of being murdered by your government when you return home, then that's different.

I completely agree. I can understand if they don’t do it because their life is in danger. But if they are being homophobic and then hiding behind religion… that I can’t stand

Really impressive how they can both respect and not respect someone who’s LGBT, not hate and hate someone who’s LGBT, and whatever else they come up with. Also love that they accept others “choices”. Which choice? Because being LGBT isn’t one. Maybe they mean my choice to dye hair or get tattoos? Or choice to have a burger for lunch? Not seeing the relevance of the topic though.
But yeah it’s your choice to be a homophobe. No one follows religious texts to the word, it’s just that being religious gives you an excuse to pretend that someone else is controlling this decision. As my sisters T-shirt says “Being gay isn’t a choice. Being homophobic is”.

NHL players have some of the most fragile masculinity ever and I'm gonna need them to stop grandstanding over things that have no impact on them. My rule is, if your beliefs of your religion start impacting others, you're doing your religion wrong. It's such b.s. to pretend canceling the whole thing over a few players' religious objections is somehow inclusive and respectful of everyone. They're not respecting someone's religion, they're rubber-stamping bigotry to avoid having to actually have a stance on one side or the other.

Also massive middle finger to the Minnesota Wild for their disgusting behavior. For pride night they flew in Jack Jablonski, a local who was paralyzed playing high school hockey, then later came out as gay, to take part and even had patches designed in his honor to put on the jerseys they ended up not wearing. Jablonski was the only one who did end up wearing the jersey.

Even more fucked? Jablonski was playing for a private Catholic school when he was injured. 15 NHL teams visited him in the hospital when he was injured, yet suddenly their religion means they don't support people like him.

They use the “man shall not lie with man” excuse but in reality it was mistranslated. The original stated that man shall not lay with child. The bible is against pedophilia, not homosexuality
