College, university, and institute. Where I'm from they all mean the same thing, but I know in some countries there are differences. What's it like where you're from?

Edit: apparently they’re not the same. Colleges have certain characteristics and universities have others, though some colleges have university characteristics too. They’re not actually noticeably different imo for undergraduates most of the time though.

They do not mean the same thing here. Colleges are more hands on and allow for placements, whereas universities do not.

I would say college and university are the same. In my mind an institute is more about research and science than about learning and study.

College is called Cégep where I live.

Also both middle school and high school are together (same building) so we just call it high school.

So... it was a university

But the majors were all separated into colleges. As far as I knew, they all just had specific buildings. But it was all under one university.
Which yeah is confusing because entire schools can be named 'x' College instead of 'x' University.

Oh. I think I’ve heard that being used too. I just looked it up and there are actually supposedly differences but college can still mean a stand-alone thing not just a section of a university.

Is it a province wise thing? For the US I think we have different divisions of schools in the country, whether changing the grades considered in each school or adding a new one completely. Not sure if there’s state regulations about the second one but there definitely isn’t for the first one.

Each provinces have differences but Quebec is known to be very different from everyone else. Quebec main language is French and our culture is quite different from the rest of Canada hence why I believe the province is different with a lot of things.

Oh yeah, I know about Quebec and their special child syndrome (kidding ofc). I was just curious if the structure of the education system age wise was based on province for you guys or if it was a do whatever you want within reason type thing like for us

I’ve seen that listed as differences too, that colleges only offer undergrad and universities also offer masters and phd too. Except for those colleges that also offer masters and phd too
