I wish this week was just a big April Fools Joke. My pup is everything to me. He is my child, my happiness, my morning hug, my furnace, my vital organ. He's always been healthy aside from a few 'look a rotten chicken bone nomnomnom' moments soon followed by diarrhea or worst case when he had a tape worm. He would still be his normal self and energetic throughout all that.
But he woke up Tuesday and was not himself. I thought maybe he's just moody or I witnessed him eat something off the floor a few days before Tuesday and maybe he was getting the runny butts. Ran back during my break and found he still didn't touch his food. Stayed with him the rest of te day. Wouldn't even eat his favorite foods, was very tired. Didn't want to bark at any passing dogs. Figured maybe he'll eat when he's really hungry because he'd never go over skipping 2 meals. The entire night he kept wanting to try pooping every hour to 1.5 hours. (This is normal for him when he's eating something bad but his attempts to poop were concerning and little plus he hadnt eaten so idk what he was trying to push out.) Something wasnt right so I took him to the hospital.
My hope was they would tell him he'll get better after giving him an injection of some sort or prescription. They ran tests all day. The place was nice enough to let me stay with him in a room with his own cage.
He had a fever that was all over the place. Went in with a 105. Dropped to 102 then back up to 103. Normal dog temp is 101-102 F I love the staff there, they were so nice and accommodating for him and myself. X-ray showed nothing. Every test came back negative or normal except his blood showed signs of a form of anemia. Pancytopenia was the concern. This is where the conversation dropped low because they had to have to talk of him potentially having cancer. The hospital, as nice as it was, was not equipped with the kind of detailed answer I needed so they sent his samples to a specialist. Next day just gets worse. He has to be transferred to a specialty hospital.
And they then give me the worse news. Worst case he would have bone marrow cancer and could pass in 1-2 days. At worst. I know they have to be honest but this was so hard. He's just a baby. As chunky as he is he's so small and just turned 4. This tiny baby hooked up with 3 things. Like he's just a baby.
Unfortunately, I couldn't stay at the specialty hospital outside of visiting hours. And even then I can't actually be with him because he's in the ICU with other patients. I'm sure you're thinking Nina, get a second opinion. Every document, test, paper, email, I got was sent out to my brother, my friend, people they knew in medicine and animal medicine. 6-7 people were calling me telling me the same results. I was holding on to that second opinion hope after having a long conversation with someone who was in the same situation that turned out to be a much small concern and their pup is doing fine.
Before doing anything invasive, they wanted to get him stable with antibiotics and steroids.
The ultrasound found nothing as well.
Friday morning, finally got some good news. He ate. My baby ate some chicken. His blood levels look better. They didn't have to perform a blood transfusion which they were planning to if nothing changes overnight. He could potentially come back home with me today.
Throughout this we've been alone for most of it. I live with my brother but he was on a buisness trip and the fastest flight he could get landed just now. My mom was planning to drive up but I found out she was sick herself and I didn't want her to come here ill. It would just make herself even more ill plus his hospital still does temperature checks so I need to stay healthy.
My good friend was able to stay with me at night and helped with the phone calls and sorting out his insurance. Also I fucking love you guys @Day and @Exi I just needed a distraction and you guys were there. Everyone keeps asking me 'what happened to Bub?' And you guys were the bit 'look at this silly cat and look at these hot manz' I needed. Plus binging game caterers helped take my mind off things too. Seeing my apartment empty with all his toys and clothes is really hard knowing he's in pain right now.
I hope I can bring him home today.
So yeah, being a parent sucks. x.x
I havent touched my alerts so sorry if I havent responded to anything.
