What’s your opinion on the Oxford comma? (1 Viewer)

Basically it’s the last comma in a list of things, as it can be used or omitted generally based on style.

With Oxford comma:
I like my dog, my cat, and my tarantula.

Without:
I like my dog, my cat and my tarantula.

I don’t get people excluding it. It makes the sentence less clear imo and it flows worse when you omit it. But that’s just me

I'm used to the Oxford comma too since that's how I've learned to write in school.

Anything else is uncivilized.... and abnormal.

I'm an Oxfordian comma fan because I corrected my college English professor and got extra credit for proving her wrong. The rules state that is can be used but is not required for proper sentence punctuation. She marked me wrong on the midterm for not using it.

The college level english 2 class felt like a HS english class to me. And thats not because I'm a genius. It was just very basic. I think a lot of Jr. College classes in CA are trying to bring HS graduates up to where they should already be because the public education system in California is trash.

I don't think it's necessary most of the time, to be honest. Sometimes it can help with clarity, but I'm used to writing copy for web and digital, as well under the standards of the AP Style Guide, which de-emphasizes its usage.

I had no idea an Oxford comma existed- I was always taught to not use it bc you’re already using the “and” so you don’t need it😭

I think the Oxford comma is elitist, snobbish n outdated. But i do like its clarity when its used.

I love my parents, Jesus and Jenna Marbles.
Obviously in this case it’s unclear without any argument. And another case is where a Maine company got sued for millions of dollars because of ambiguity associated with overtime pay due to the exclusion of an Oxford comma. To me it feels like it’s possible that omitting it makes it unclear, but it’s not possible (I think) that including it makes it unclear, which is why I don’t get why inclusion is optional.

There is no Oxford comma aka serial comma in German grammar. Having said that, my English comma placement is sometimes disastrous. Quite possibly I use Oxford commas too when writing in English.
