When I travel with just a carry-on I like to pack a small lightweight nylon bag that can hold a laptop and a few other essentials. When a flight is full an airline will usually offer to check in anyone's carry-ons for free. I pull out the small bag, put the laptop and other stuff in it, and check in my carry-on. I end up with a much smaller bag and don't have to deal with the race to stuff bags into the overhead bins of the plane.

That depends on the airline. Some will make you go to baggage claim. (Which is not too bad if you have companions with checked baggage.) Others will give you back your bag at the gate as you get off the plane.

The airline employee at the gate will be able to tell you which of the above two methods will be used by the airline.

Ah okay, I’m not a fan of talking to humans and definitely don’t want to wait in baggage claim since we have no other checked bags. But it’s not a bad idea in theory.

Not sure how it is for girls but your own razors. Cheap razors are for murdering faces and legs. I always pack my own razor and extra heads. I don't use shaving cream but I'd pack that too if there's something you like. And a pocket knife.

You’re the second to suggest razors. Does airport security even let them through? I wouldn’t need them anyways but I’m getting curious. Maybe I should have packed some pads, i kind of forgot but I’m not due to have mine yet. But who knows.
