I just mean the culture I was taught and am living in at home, so not the American one.

I guess. I don’t really have a lot of things that I feel a close attachment to. Like I know nothing about my culture/heritage (I’m Ukrainian). So my sexuality is really the only thing aboht myself that I’m totally confident in.

I guess my cultural identity and for me my nationality and ethnic identities are both tied to my cultural identity.

i suppose being cajun bc it took me until college, aka living outside of louisiana, until i finally embraced it.
when i was younger i thought a lot abt the culture was "annoying" or "weird" bc we are just a little group in louisiana i thought we were just annoying southerners its so much more and i hate that i didnt appreciate it growing up. now i try to express it whenever i can.
we're a culture holding on its last strings, the only thing that's probably gonna last is our food.

which is fine because our food is amazing, but there's so much more but it's just not there anymore. 😭 or region locked down in louisiana. 😭 there is SOME fellow cajuns in this area of texas ive noticed, but its less "community" and more "individuals" ykno. many cajun restaurants tho... so yay. but yeah, cajun culture is really dope but also really dying so i want to hold onto it as much as i can. i wish my grandpa taught me more of the dialect, bc our language is near extinct too. only the older folk know it fluently atp really. younger generation just catch certain phrases we say, etc, not really hold onto a full conversation type.

i love being cajun!! i am cajun!!!! we have amazing food, music, and a really weird language! we have cool traditions & interesting history! south louisiana is beautiful ! that is my home!! we r more than just our food i swear 😭😭😭😭



ONE time in my life living in texas a very nice older lady actually asked me if i was cajun and i was like "?????? how did you know." that's not something non-acadiana's figure out just by looking, especially @ ME. LOL

I don’t talk about it all that much because I don’t know much about Ukrainian culture. I guess sometimes I’m proud of being Canadian but at the same time there’s some fucked up things Canada has done in the past.

There is a Ukrainian festival in my city later this summer and I was thinking of going. I also wanna try and learn how to make certain dishes too

Every culture, race, country, etc has bad stuff in it's past. Those bad things do not mean the good matters less. If that was the case then we all must be miserable and guilty for things we did not do, most likely were not alive for or had no decision in. It's ok to have pride in who you are. That goes for EVERYONE!

I think what’s important is being able to recognize the good but also criticize the bad and not blindly support bc that’s how we make it better

i have the utmost respect for people who are proud of their heritage and culture but also not afraid to criticize the country and stand up for their people

You both make very valid points. Like yeah I’m proud to be Canadian and rn we are working towards becoming a truly diverse and accepting place. But yeah we’ve done some fucked up thing and need to be held accountable.

i mean I’m starting this year and I can’t even write or read my parent’s language

you could also see if there’s films you could watch with subtitles or books by people of Ukrainian descent in genres you’d normally read like I’ve been doing with Asians this month
