This month I read 3 books and struggled through a 4th.
Only finished 3 of the 4 books I was reading this month.
I will be honest and say bluntly that this month SUCKED.
I mean I was mainly reading one book the whole month so I grabbed short audiobooks
to help me increase my reading count so I didn't fall behind on my 50-book end goal.
All the books were meh.
But-I finished 3 books.
None were re-reads.
Most of these were short stories that were quick reads.
May Reads:
Final Rating: 3 Stars
Summary: Logan's fathers have always been invested in the paranormal so naturally she and her family are
constantly on the move. Going from one spooky down or haunted library to the next. Until her fathers land back in their hometown
of Snakebite, Oregon. Something is incredibly off about the small town. They treat her and her dads like they will be the end of Snakebite. It doesn't
help that when the pair left it was not on good terms with the town not accepting their sexuality, and upon their return, a town favorite
has gone missing and the town seems to think that Logan's parents are to blame.
Ashley is the golden girl of Snakebite. Her beloved boyfriend is the one who has gone missing. Her mother practically owns all of
Snakebite and seems to have something against Logan's parents. But despite all of her friends being rude to Logan and her family,
Ashley is strangely drawn to Logan. Not to mention something seems off in town and Ashley and Logan are both
willing to put aside their skepticism for ghosts to get to the bottom of what is truly going on.
But as they dig deeper and deeper things get far darker than they had anticipated.

Review: I want to say that the 3-star rating is simply because when I finished this book it was just ok.
I didn't hate it but I didn't love it and I didn't particularly like it enough to give it 4 stars. The bottom line is that this was well written.
I think Gould is very good at creating a creepy and eerie atmosphere that makes you feel sketched out. But with that being said,
I don't think anything really terrifying happened until much later in the book and by that point, I had kind of gotten over this book being labeled horror.
I want to also state that the relationship between Logan and Ashley turning from friendship to something more kind of came out of left field.
Not that I hated it, I thought it was genuinely cute. BUT I need things to flow naturally in regard to friendships and relationships.
It didn't flow well for me which sucked because I actually really loved their dynamic. The mystery aspect of everything
was also sort of cool but left something to be desired. I think the overall concept of this was good and I think I would LOVE to see it as a movie.
But I think a lot of aspects of it didn't come to full fruition for me and as a result, left me feeling sort of meh.

as a group of friends comes to a heian-era mansion in Japan to celebrate a marriage amongst their group.
But tensions rise amongst the friend group as more strange things occur and the tales of the mansion
seem to be true. But can they all make it out alive before the mansion tears them apart?

Review: So I enjoyed this book for what it was, but it is a short story. It's a novella that only has a few pages
so as a result the author had a hard job putting together all of the character's back stories in a timely manner.
I personally think she did a great job pulling this short story off. There was so much tension and backstory for the entire friend group.
This tension built slowly and then crescendoed so fucking hard my neck almost broke from following along. The book is horror which is where it lost me.
Yes, this book takes place in a haunted mansion with a creepy backstory. The friend group seems less like friend and more like friends of circumstance.
So the dynamic quickly falls apart which is part of the horror in the story. But instead of horrifying me, I was more sad by the end of the book.
I think if I re-read this physically my feelings might've changed. But as for now, I think the quick build-up of tension was great.
I think everything erupting into chaos was brilliant but by the end, I was left not satisfied.

Summary: Silvie's father is an Anthropology teacher, and this summer he has dragged his daughter and wife along with him to enjoy simpler times with his students.
They begin to explore the traditions of old times. By setting up camp in the woods. Hunting for their food, gathering fresh fruit and vegetation.
Just doing their best to become one with the past, but things get all too real when the students and Silvie's father decide to do a Ghost Wall.
A traditional way of defending their group from evil through a horrible horrible act.
And Silvie finds herself at the other end. The only one seeming to be aware of how depraved the entire group has become.
Can she make them come to their senses before there is no turning back?

Review: So uh, I listened to this on audio. I will be straight up and say that I struggled to understand it.
There are certain accents I struggle with and basically ANYTHING British is incoherent to me. When I picked this book up,
I had no clue it took place in Europe and as a result, when the narrator started talking I was almost instantly lost and confused.
Now that is NOT the writer's fault or anyone's fault really except my own stupidity. But I eventually was able to follow along.
Now when I read the synopsis I picked this book up with ONE expectation. ONE. LITERALLY ONE.
....the book didn't follow through with it. So I am pretty bitter in all honesty and I realize my expectation is one that makes me
a monster but when I go into horror I expect some sort of level of depravity. Especially when it's a realistic horror like this one was meant to be.
Now I will say the author fit alot into this short story which impressed me and got me to at least bump it up to .5-and me not understanding most of it
but that being my fault is why it got at least 1 star higher than I typically would rate it. But overall this book was NOT what it promised.
Currently Reading: Tokyo Ghoul Vol. 11 & Daughter of Doctor Moreau
(I am reading something else right now BUT if I had been on time this would be accurate)
